This article traces the lineage of critical literacy from Freire through critical pedagogies and discourse analysis. It discusses the need for a contingent definition of critical literacy, given the increasingly sophisticated nature of texts and discourses.

Josué de Castro's 'Geografia Combatente' and the political ecology of hunger

The purpose of this study was to investigate musical parenting of infants and toddlers in Brazil. Forty-three Brazilian mothers were interviewed on musical experience and preferences, beliefs and uses of music with their children. Results suggest that mothers appear to be caught between two main forces: the natural humanurge to interact, communicate and bondwithyoung children and the need to conform to social norms including those concerning consumer behaviours. These results mirror those found in industrialised countries, and suggest that the notion of middle-class as a cultural pattern appears to be more widespread than previously thought. Implications for music education are outlined at the end of the paper.

Paulo Freire and the Cold War Politics of Literacy

This article examines the politics of literacy during the administration of Chilean President Eduardo Frei. Literacy training was an essential part of Christian Democratic efforts to promote agrarian reform and rural unionisation and incorporate the peasantry into the Chilean political system. Paulo Freire, working for the ministries of agriculture and education, was able to employ his innovative ‘consciousness raising’ techniques throughout Chile. In practice, the campaign often blurred the line between creating a critical consciousness and creating a Christian Democratic consciousness, while Freire himself became caught up in political struggles within the administration over the extent and pace of reform.

Entre 1958 e 1964, o nordeste tornou-se o foco de uma nova politica no Brasil. Paulo Freire era uma figura destacada na regiao nessa epoca. Campanhas de alfabetizacao usando o metodo dele tentaram alistar mais eleitores em Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, e Sergipe. Politicos como o Presidente Joao Goulart, o Governador Miguel Arraes (PE) e o Governador Joao de Seixas Doria (SE) viram no metodo de Freire a possibilidade de mudar a consciencia do povo e transformar o pais. O governo americano no principio apoiou Freire no Rio Grande do Norte, mas logo os Estados Unidos e os militares brasileiros ficaram temerosos. Com o golpe de 1964, os participantes das campanhas de alfabetizacao foram perseguidos e tiveram que sair do pais. Assim chegou ao fim uma epoca dinâmica no nordeste brasileiro.
