The influence of diet on the distribution of nitrogen isotopes in animals was investigated by analyzing animals grown in the laboratory on diets of constant nitrogen isotopic composition. 
The isotopic composition of the nitrogen in an animal reflects the nitrogen isotopic composition of its diet. The δ^(15)N values of the whole bodies of animals are usually more positive than those of their diets. Different individuals of a species raised on the same diet can have significantly different δ^(15)N values. The variability of the relationship between the δ^(15)N values of animals and their diets is greater for different species raised on the same diet than for the same species raised on different diets. Different tissues of mice are also enriched in ^(15)N relative to the diet, with the difference between the δ^(15)N values of a tissue and the diet depending on both the kind of tissue and the diet involved. The δ^(15)N values of collagen and chitin, biochemical components that are often preserved in fossil animal remains, are also related to the δ^(15)N value of the diet. 
The dependence of the δ^(15)N values of whole animals and their tissues and biochemical components on the δ^(15)N value of diet indicates that the isotopic composition of animal nitrogen can be used to obtain information about an animal's diet if its potential food sources had different δ^(15)N values. The nitrogen isotopic method of dietary analysis probably can be used to estimate the relative use of legumes vs non-legumes or of aquatic vs terrestrial organisms as food sources for extant and fossil animals. However, the method probably will not be applicable in those modern ecosystems in which the use of chemical fertilizers has influenced the distribution of nitrogen isotopes in food sources. 
The isotopic method of dietary analysis was used to reconstruct changes in the diet of the human population that occupied the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico over a 7000 yr span. Variations in the δ^(15)C and δ^(15)N values of bone collagen suggest that C_4 and/or CAM plants (presumably mostly corn) and legumes (presumably mostly beans) were introduced into the diet much earlier than suggested by conventional archaeological analysis.

The current evidence suggests that many diet and exercise interventions to prevent obesity in children are not effective in preventing weight gain, but can be effective in promoting a healthy diet and increased physical activity levels.Being very overweight (obese) can cause health, psychological and social problems for children. Programmes designed to prevent obesity focus on modifying one or more of the factors considered to promote obesity.This review included 22 studies that tested a variety of intervention programmes, which involved increased physical activity and dietary changes, singly or in combination. Participants were under 18 and living in Asia, South America, Europe or North America. There is not enough evidence from trials to prove that any one particular programme can prevent obesity in children, although comprehensive strategies to address dietary and physical activity change, together with psycho-social support and environmental change may help. There was a trend for newer interventions to involve their respective communities and to include evaluations.Future research might usefully assess changes made on behalf of entire populations, such as improvements in the types of foods available at schools and in the availability of safe places to run and play, and should assess health effects and costs over several years.The programmes in this review used different strategies to prevent obesity so direct comparisons were difficult. Also, the duration of the studies ranged from 12 weeks to three years, but most lasted less than a year.

Issue addressed School gardens are a potentially important health promotion tool, allowing the growth and consumption of fruit and vegetables to be embedded within the students’ educational experience. This study aimed to investigate the implementation of edible gardens in New Zealand (NZ) primary and secondary schools. Methods A questionnaire mailed to principals from a randomly selected sample of 764 NZ schools included questions on whether or not the school had a garden and, if so, what produce was grown; how long the garden had been in place; how harvested crops were distributed; and curriculum integration. Results Among 491 responding schools (64.3% response rate), 52.9% currently had an edible garden – with most gardens started in the previous two years. Vegetables, herbs and tree fruit were commonly grown. Gardens were integrated into curriculum subjects, cooking lessons, recipes and messages promoting increased fruit and vegetable consumption. Conclusions Edible gardens were common within NZ schools, though often relatively new, and were used for teaching in a variety of curriculum areas. So what? Given the current popularity of school gardens, there are opportunities to deliver health promotion messages regarding consumption of fruit and vegetables, and for these to be reinforced by real life experience growing and preparing healthy food.

A Methodology for Speech Data Analysis and a Framework for Adaptive Speech Recognition Using Fuzzy Neural Networks.

Objective: To demonstrate the application of item response theory (IRT) to scale assessment in public health research by determining the construct validity of a scale on attitudes towards suntanning. Methods: Five triennial, cross-sectional summertime computeradministered telephone interviews (CATI) surveys, 1994-2006, were conducted among the adult New Zealand (NZ) urban population, 15-69 years. Respondents (n=6,200) indicated agreement / disagreement with seven statements on 5-point Likert-type scales. Results: The scale was developed and assessed using Rasch, 2- and 3-parameter item response theory (IRT) models. Support was found for a single latent construct (ProTan). Scale properties improved when one item, more appropriately a 'knowledge' item, was excluded. This reduced scale was assessed for validity by correlating with variables considered to be associated with ProTan (Sunburn occurrence and duration outdoors) - these items were positively and statistically significantly associated with the scale, although the association was weak. Conclusion: IRT is a potentially useful analysis for scale development and assessment of construct validity in public health research. The revised ProTan scale can be used as an attitude scale, and is potentially comparable with other international research and scales that have been utilised to assess attitudes towards tanning. Implications: Opportunities exist to improve the scale, however the current analysis strengthens the applicability of the scale to the NZ urban population.

Applying Item Response Theory (IRT) to a Suntan Attitudes Scale

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of promoting increased lean red meat consumption on serum concentrations of total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and serum fatty acid composition, among toddlers. In a 20-week randomized controlled trial healthy 12 to 20-month-old children were assigned to: red meat (n = 90; parents were encouraged to add 56 g/day of lean red meat to their toddler's usual diet), or control (n = 90) groups. Food and nutrient intakes were assessed with 3-day weighed food records (baseline, week 4, and week 20). Serum was analyzed for total and HDL cholesterol concentrations, and fatty acid composition (baseline and week 20). At week 20, relative to control, the red meat group had higher intakes of red meat, all meat, and carbohydrate; and lower intakes of milk, energy, cholesterol, and total, saturated, and monounsaturated fat (P = 0.043 for energy, all others P ≤ 0.002). No effects associated with the intervention were found for total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, total to HDL cholesterol ratio, or serum fatty acid composition (all P ≥ 0.059) aside from pentadecanoic acid (P = 0.047). An ∼3-fold increase in lean red meat intake, from ∼10 to ∼30 g/day, resulted in no consistent changes in serum lipids or fatty acid composition, suggesting that the addition of ∼2 tablespoons/day of lean red meat to toddlers' diets will likely not adversely affect serum lipids or serum fatty acids.
