A Cost Constraint Alone Has Adverse Effects on Food Selection and Nutrient Density: An Analysis of Human Diets by Linear Programming

TL;DR: A simple cost constraint can decrease the nutrient densities of diets and influence food selection in ways that reproduce the food intake patterns observed among low socioeconomic groups, suggesting that economic measures will be needed to effectively improve the nutritional quality of diets consumed by populations.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Review of Phytate, Iron, Zinc, and Calcium Concentrations in Plant-Based Complementary Foods Used in Low-Income Countries and Implications for Bioavailability:

TL;DR: To ensure the World Health Organization estimated needs for these minerals from plant-based complementary foods for breastfed infants are met, dephytinization must be combined with enrichment with animal-source foods and/or fortification with appropriate levels and forms of mineral fortificants.
Journal ArticleDOI

Complementary foods for infant feeding in developing countries: their nutrient adequacy and improvement.

TL;DR: Most or all appear to meet the estimated daily nutrient needs from complementary foods for protein, thiamin and copper, but not for calcium, iron, and in some cases zinc, even if moderate bioavailability for iron and zinc is assumed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Do economic constraints encourage the selection of energy dense diets

TL;DR: It is suggested that, although an energy dense diet can be selected at a relatively high cost, when cost is not influencing food choices, anEnergy dense diet will be preferentially selected to maintain habitual French dietary patterns when the budget for food is low.
Journal ArticleDOI

Women's empowerment and child nutritional status in South Asia: a synthesis of the literature.

TL;DR: It is highlighted that different women's empowerment domains may relate differently to child nutritional status, and future research should aim to harmonise definitions of women's empowering, which key domains it should include, and how it is measured.
