TL;DR: In this paper, the basic principle of voltage induction and corresponding polarities of three phase transformers is revisited and a down-to-earth approach to group connections is proposed.
Abstract: Group connections of three phase transformers are very important with respect to transformer operation in practice. It has been our experience as teachers while dealing with the topic for more than two decades that students often get confused mainly because they try to find out some sort of correlation between mechanical placement of windings and the corresponding voltage phasors. This confusion has a root in three phase - or Y voltages, where the mechanical positioning of windings and related phasors assume the same pattern. In this paper, group connections are ‘revisited’ starting from the basic principle of voltage induction and corresponding polarities via a down-to-earth approach.
