Regulation by AI

Artificial intelligence (“AI”) entails the development of machine technology to imitate human intelligence, achieving greater efficiency in the performance of tasks hitherto performed by humans. The study of AI over time has revealed this concept to be an exciting contribution, to the world of technology as we know it, and other areas of human endeavors including legal practice, the administration of justice, financial services, insurance, health, etc. This paper examines how the adoption of AI has changed and may change the business of law practice globally and in Nigeria in particular. We conclude in this chapter that a progressive view of AI would be one that regards it not as a complicated development but as yet another “everyday” advancement that follows suit from the way technology has quickly proven its relevance. Specifically, AI will eventually change the model, mechanisms, and ways of providing legal services, the curriculum of legal education, and the required skillsets for legal employment and may lead to the direct or indirect collaboration of law firms and technology companies, both globally and in Nigeria.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Law Practice in Nigeria

Digital technology has expanded in the most varied branches, which brings the need to adapt professionals to the reality of the job market. The introduction of artificial intelligence in the practice of law results from decades of studies to optimize time and standardize procedures for harmony and administrative integration in the judiciary (Andrade, Rosa & Pinto, 2020). A question that needs to be debated in this regard is whether the exponential growth of digital technology will prove to be an opportunity or a downfall for legal professionals. Based on these questions, the objective of this study is to weave reflections on the use of artificial intelligence in the professional practice of legal activities. To answer the proposed question, a descriptive literature review on the subject and a documentary analysis of the websites of the judiciary in Brazil were carried out. In this study, about 11 examples of the use of artificial intelligence in Brazilian courts were found. The ability to analyze billions of information and establish logical connections between them, accomplished through artificial intelligence, represents a gain for the work of lawyers and the Judiciary. It happens that technological advances continue at a great speed and law schools continue to train professionals who in a short period of time can be replaced by robots. In the meantime, it is essential to think about not only changing the mentality of those who are in practice, but also reformulating the way of teaching law and approaching the profession in school benches.

Because of this lack of legal services, most people are forced to represent themselves or they give up their rights without even going to court. Legal technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), has revolutionized the practice of law. Technology typically is developed and used by those who can afford it. Embracing AI can help reduce the justice gap by driving down costs and increasing access to legal services. Failure to act preemptively will only serve to continue the gap in access to justice.

Present years have seen the utilization of artificial intelligence in an assortment of industries, from inn attendant robots to robotized amusement and wireless use cases. It is difficult to exaggerate the effect of artificial intelligence on a wide scope of sectors. Critical Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Indian Legal Sectors

This article explores the future for lawyers and law firms in the light of the changes that Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) is already bringing to the universe of legal services. Part I briefly describes some of the ways AI is already in use in ordinary life - from facial recognition, through medical diagnosis to translation services. Part II describes how AI is transforming what it means to provide legal services in six primary areas: litigation review; expertise automation; legal research; contract analytics; contract and litigation document generation; and predictive analytics. Part III explores who are the providers of these AI driven legal services - often non-lawyer legal service providers - and how these providers are replacing at least some of what clients have traditionally sought from lawyers. Part III also discusses the implications of all these changes both for the future role of lawyers individually, and in particular what services will clients still need lawyers to perform: judgment, empathy, creativity and adaptability. In turn, this Part examines what will these changes mean for the size, shape, composition and economic model of law firms, as well as the implications of these changes for legal education and lawyer training. Part IV identifies the principal legal, ethical, regulatory and risk management issues raised by the use of AI in the provision of legal services. Finally, in Part V the article considers who will be the likely providers of AI based services other than law firms: legal publishers, major accounting firms and venture capital funded businesses.
