The aim of this paper is to present the basic principles and recent advances in the area of statistical process control charting with the aid of runs rules. More specifically, we review the well known Shewhart type control charts supplemented with additional rules based on the theory of runs and scans. The motivation for this article stems from the fact that during the last decades, the performance improvement of the Shewhart charts by exploiting runs rules has attracted continuous research interest. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the Markov chain approach which is the most popular technique for studying the run length distribution of run based control charts.

Run-sum control charts for monitoring the coefficient of variation

This paper provides a methodology for identifying the dynamics of international firm expansion, demonstrating systematic evidence of both ‘toe in the water’ and concentrated bursts of internationalization by US multinational enterprises. We use the methodology of statistical process control to analyze initial investments in host countries and develop a numerical measure of temporal clustering or bunching. Using this measure, we identify two distinct patterns of growth; whereas some firms cluster their investments over time, others do not cluster their investments. For firms that cluster, three types of clustering strategy are identified: concentrating, hibernating, and hybrid. Arguments based on internal firm architecture, experience, and learning are advanced to explain these findings.

Average run lengths of the zone control chart are presented, The performance of this chart is compared with that of several Shewhart charts with and without runs rules, It is shown that the standard zone control chart has performance similar to some even simpler charts and a much higher false alarm rate than the Shewhart chart with all of the common runs rules. It is also shown that a slightly modified zone control chart outperforms the Shewhart chart with the common runs rules.
