Meta-analytic techniques were used to estimate the effects of exposure to community violence on mental health outcomes across 114 studies. Community violence had its strongest effects on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and externalizing problems and smallest impact on other internalizing symptoms. Victimization by community violence most predicted symptomatology compared to witnessing or hearing about community violence. Witnessing community violence had a greater effect than hearing about violence on externalizing problems, but both types of exposure had an equal impact on other internalizing problems. PTSD symptoms were equally predicted by victimization, witnessing, or hearing about community violence. Compared to children, adolescents reported a stronger relationship between externalizing behaviors and exposure, whereas children exhibited greater internalizing problems than did adolescents.

Community violence: A meta-analysis on the effect of exposure and mental health outcomes of children and adolescents

The present meta-analysis integrates research from 1,435 studies on associations of parenting dimensions and styles with externalizing symptoms in children and adolescents. Parental warmth, behavioral control, autonomy granting, and an authoritative parenting style showed very small to small negative concurrent and longitudinal associations with externalizing problems. In contrast, harsh control, psychological control, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful parenting were associated with higher levels of externalizing problems. The strongest associations were observed for harsh control and psychological control. Parental warmth, behavioral control, harsh control, psychological control, autonomy granting, authoritative, and permissive parenting predicted change in externalizing problems over time, with associations of externalizing problems with warmth, behavioral control, harsh control, psychological control, and authoritative parenting being bidirectional. Moderating effects of sampling, child's age, form of externalizing problems, rater of parenting and externalizing problems, quality of measures, and publication status were identified. Associations of parenting dimensions and styles with externalizing problems of children and adolescents: An updated meta-analysis.

Men and women experience different kinds of mental health problems. While women exceed men in internalizing disorders such as depression and anxiety, men exhibit more externalizing disorders such as substance abuse and antisocial behavior, which are problematic for others. These differences also vary by race and social class: for example, African Americans possess better mental health and, thus, a smaller gender gap in psychiatric problems. What explains these differences? We concentrate on conceptions of gender and gender practices. Research on gender and mental health suggests that conceptions of masculinity and femininity affect major risk factors for internalizing and externalizing problems, including the stressors men and women are exposed to, the coping strategies they use, the social relationships they engage in, and the personal resources and vulnerabilities they develop. This chapter investigates explanations in these areas for gender differences both in general and by race and class.

Gender and mental health.

This study compared family relationships across three groups of adolescents: a) those with unipolar depressive disorders (n = 82); b) those with subdiagnostic depressive symptoms (n = 78); and c) those without emotional or behavioral difficulties (n = 83). Results based on multi-source, multi-method constructs indicated that depressed adolescents, as well as those with subdiagnostic symptomatology, experience less supportive and more conflictual relationships with each of their parents than do healthy adolescents. These findings are notable in demonstrating that adverse father-adolescent relationships are associated with depressive symptomatology in much the same way as mother-adolescent relationships. As well, they add to the emerging evidence that adolescents with subdiagnostic symptoms experience difficulties in social relationships similar to those experienced by adolescents with depressive disorder.

Exposure to violence and parenting as mediators between poverty and psychological symptoms in urban African American adolescents.

SUMMARY The present study tested the hypothesis that maternal depression and negative parenting mediate the relationship between economic stress and psychological symptoms among urban African American youth. Two distinct economic Stressors were examined: (1) acute economic loss and (2) chronic economic strain. Each of these economic Stressors was expected to predict maternal depression, which, in turn, was expected to predict negative parenting, which, finally, was expected to predict adolescent symptoms. Results suggest that maternal depression and negative parenting partially mediate the relationship between economic stress and adolescent psychological symptoms among urban African American youth. Directions for future research and intervention implications are outlined.

Economic Stress and Psychological Distress Among Urban African American Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Parents

We prove relativistic versions of the ladder asymptotics from V. Guillemin and A. Uribe [Journal of Differential Geometry, 32(2):315-347, 1990] on principal bundles over globally hyperbolic, stationary, spatially compact spacetimes equipped with a Kaluza-Klein metric. This involves understanding the distribution of the frequency spectrum for the wave equation on a Kaluza-Klein spacetime when restricted to the isotypic subspace of an irreducible representation of the structure group, in the limit that the weight of the representation approaches infinity in the Weyl chamber. This is a direct generalization of the results from A. Strohmaier and S. Zelditch [Indagationes Mathematicae 32 (2021), 323-363] and is closely related to Strohmaier-Zelditch [Advances in Mathematics, Volume 376, 2021, 107434] and O. Islam arXiv:2109.09219. Furthermore we show how to apply these results to frequency asymptotics for the massive Klein-Gordon equation on vector bundles as one takes the representation defining the vector bundle to infinity.

A Trace Formula on Stationary Kaluza-Klein Spacetimes

Obstetric violence has been recognized as a significant risk factor for maternal morbidity and mortality globally. However, there is lack of literature on the abuse of birthing women and their maternal rights in formal healthcare settings in Niger. This paper explores women's experiences of violence in public maternity care in Niger to identify drivers, facilitators, manifestations, and consequences of the maltreatment of women during labor and delivery. We qualitatively explored the experiences of women who gave birth in a public maternity hospital or clinic within the 5 years preceding the study. We conducted five key informant interviews to help inform recruitment and interview protocols, a listening session with eight mothers, and individual interviews with 50 women from four areas of the urban region of Niamey. The 58 participating mothers shared experiences that included physical abuse (slapping), verbal abuse (insults), psychological abuse (mockery), discrimination (social status/ economic status), financial coercion (demanding money prior to care), and harmful birthing practices (forcing the baby out with elbows). Socio-cultural aspects driving maltreatment of women included beliefs about expression of pain during labor and delivery, while social connection and the presence of the physician during delivery were protective factors. Our study findings reflect global concerns about obstetric violence and its consequences. Given the high burden of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality in Niger it is critical to train clinical staff in safe and respectful maternity care, to improve supervision of care, to institute legal recourse for women, and to consider the integration of traditional birth attendants in clinical settings.
