In this article we propose a standard for role-based access control (RBAC). Although RBAC models have received broad support as a generalized approach to access control, and are well recognized for their many advantages in performing large-scale authorization management, no single authoritative definition of RBAC exists today. This lack of a widely accepted model results in uncertainty and confusion about RBAC's utility and meaning. The standard proposed here seeks to resolve this situation by unifying ideas from a base of frequently referenced RBAC models, commercial products, and research prototypes. It is intended to serve as a foundation for product development, evaluation, and procurement specification. Although RBAC continues to evolve as users, researchers, and vendors gain experience with its application, we feel the features and components proposed in this standard represent a fundamental and stable set of mechanisms that may be enhanced by developers in further meeting the needs of their customers. As such, this document does not attempt to standardize RBAC features beyond those that have achieved acceptance in the commercial marketplace and research community, but instead focuses on defining a fundamental and stable set of RBAC components. This standard is organized into the RBAC Reference Model and the RBAC System and Administrative Functional Specification. The reference model defines the scope of features that comprise the standard and provides a consistent vocabulary in support of the specification. The RBAC System and Administrative Functional Specification defines functional requirements for administrative operations and queries for the creation, maintenance, and review of RBAC sets and relations, as well as for specifying system level functionality in support of session attribute management and an access control decision process.

An automated communications system operates to transfer data, metadata and methods from a provider computer to a consumer computer through a communications network. The transferred information controls the communications relationship, including responses by the consumer computer, updating of information, and processes for future communications. Information which changes in the provider computer is automatically updated in the consumer computer through the communications system in order to maintain continuity of the relationship. Transfer of metadata and methods permits intelligent processing of information by the consumer computer and combined control by the provider and consumer of the types and content of information subsequently transferred. Object oriented processing is used for storage and transfer of information. The use of metadata and methods further allows for automating may of the actions underlying the communications, including communication acknowledgements and archiving of information. Service objects and partner servers provide specialized data, metadata, and methods to providers and consumers to automate many common communications services and transactions useful to both providers and consumers. A combination of the provider and consumer programs and databases allows for additional functionality, including coordination of multiple users for a single database.

Semantic Analysis for Multimedia Security Application

Recent advances in telepathology, telemicroscopy, and telemedicine have opened new avenues for collaboration in medical care and scientific research. Such technology allows remote scientists and physicians to visualize and investigate biological samples in real-time. Imaging of biological specimens requires micro and even nano-scale resolution for which atomic force microscope (AFM) provides unprecedented capabilities. However, AFM has some limitations in particular, the probing hardware of AFM can introduce noise in the captured images. Robust image processing techniques are needed for accurate nano-scale representation and visualization of images generated by AFM. In this paper, we present a real-time architecture for an integrated remote AFM-based imaging system. The proposed architecture allows real-time control of a remotely located AFM and enables capturing, processing and communication of AFM images over the network. The architecture consists of four major components including, a remote AFM and real-time controller module, an image processing module for real-time image correction, a client system for visualization of scanned biological images, and a distributed image database system for information retrieval, classification, and archiving of biological specimen images received from remote AFM.

A system architecture for real-time imaging of nano-scale viruses using remote AFM

Abstract This paper describes the performance evaluation of Express programming environment on the iPSC/2 and iPSC/860 hypercube computers. Express allows parallel programs to be developed in a completely portable fashion and is available on most commercially available parallel computers as well as networks of workstations. We have developed a set of benchmarks to make a comprehensive performance assessment of the frequently used communication primitives of Express on hypercube computers. A comparison with the equivalent iPSC/2 and iPSC/860 primitives is also carried out. In addition, we have developed and benchmarked a suite of real applications including three different versions of Gaussian elimination, fast Fourier transform, and the N-body problem. These results help us evaluate the performance of Express and judge its merits against the extra overhead incurred due to portability. The results also enable us to make a comparison of two generations of hypercube systems. Furthermore, algorithm developers can benefit from these results by using the times required by the basic communication primitives on both hypercubes with and without Express, and can automate performance estimation by using these timings.

Performance Assessment of Express on the iPSC/2 and iPSC/860 Hypercube Computers

The wide spread of GPS-enabled devices and the Internet of Things (IoT) has increased the amount of spatial data being generated every second. The current scale of spatial data cannot be handled using centralized systems. This has led to the development of distributed spatial data streaming systems that scale to process in real-time large amounts of streamed spatial data. The performance of distributed streaming systems relies on how even the workload is distributed among their machines. However, it is challenging to estimate the workload of each machine because spatial data and query streams are skewed and rapidly change with time and users' interests. Moreover, a distributed spatial streaming system often does not maintain a global system workload state because it requires high network and processing overheads to be collected from the machines in the system. This paper introduces TrioStat; an online workload estimation technique that relies on a probabilistic model for estimating the workload of partitions and machines in a distributed spatial data streaming system. It is infeasible to collect and exchange statistics with a centralized unit because it requires high network overhead. Instead, TrioStat uses a decentralised technique to collect and maintain the required statistics in real-time locally in each machine. TrioStat enables distributed spatial data streaming systems to compare the workloads of machines as well as the workloads of data partitions. TrioStat requires minimal network and storage overhead. Moreover, the required storage is distributed across the system's machines.

TrioStat: Online Workload Estimation in Distributed Spatial Data Streaming Systems

The authors present an approach to manage evolutionary changes that take place over time in an object-oriented software metrics database schema. The framework is based on the entity-relation (E-R) model and uses a recursive graph structure, known as R-graph, to support the views of software quality and risk. The fundamental mechanism for abstracting views is the introduction of two semantic operators for the R-graph. These operators are proposed based on graph-based predicates and Petri-net based predicate formalism for view abstraction.
