Intense, Passionate, Romantic Love: A Natural Addiction? How the Fields That Investigate Romance and Substance Abuse Can Inform Each Other

TL;DR: It is proposed that romantic love is a natural (and often positive) addiction that evolved from mammalian antecedents by 4 million years ago as a survival mechanism to encourage hominin pair-bonding and reproduction, and there is a rationale for therapies that may help substance and/or behavioral addiction by promoting activation of these forebrain systems through long-term, calm, positive attachments to others, including group therapies.

Aspects of possible self that predict motivation to achieve or avoid it

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined a model of the cognitive basis for the motivational impact of hoped for and feared possible selves and found that motivation to attain or avoid an important possible self was significantly predicted by its availability, response time to features of that possible self, and the extent to which its attainment or avoidance was perceived as under one's control.
