Abstract: Heat transfer rates were measured to a commercial paraffin wax undergoing freezing and melting in vertical cylindrical containers. Circular, square and axially-partitioned cylinders were used. Natural convective motions were followed using tracer particles in a visual study of melting. Freezing fluxes were well predicted by a quasi-steady conduction model. Melting fluxes were enhanced by natural convection. A melting model employing an effective thermal conductivity predicted melting fluxes satisfactorily. On a mesure les vitesses de transfert de chaleur a une paraffine solide soumise a des cycles de congelation et de fusion dans des recipients cylindriques verticaux. On a employe des cylindres circulaires, carres ou a compartiments axiaux. On a pu suivre les mouvements convectifs naturels au moyen de particules de traceur dans une etude visuelle de la fusion. On a prevu de maniere satisfaisante les flux de congelation au moyen d'un modele de conduction quasi stationnaire; la convection naturelle a augmente les flux de fusion. Un modele de fusion ou l'on a utilise une conductivite thermique effective a permis de prevoir les flux de fusion de maniere satisfaisante.
