Journal ArticleDOI
Membranes: a meeting point for lipids, proteins and therapies
Pablo V. Escribá,José M. González-Ros,Félix M. Goñi,Paavo K.J. Kinnunen,László Vígh,Lissete Sánchez-Magraner,Asia M. Fernández,Xavier Busquets,Ibolya Horváth,Gwendolyn Barceló-Coblijn +9 more
TL;DR: The role of membrane microdomains and lipid mediators in the control of heat‐shock protein response and stress sensing and signalling and the membrane sensor theory are studied.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clustering and coupled gating modulate the activity in KcsA, a potassium channel model.
M L Molina,Francisco N. Barrera,Asia M. Fernández,José A. Poveda,Maria Lourdes Renart,José Antonio Encinar,Gloria Riquelme,José M. González-Ros +7 more
TL;DR: Clustering of KcsA depends on protein concentration and occurs both in detergent solution and more markedly in reconstituted membranes, including giant liposomes, where some of the clusters are large enough (up to micrometer size) to be observed by confocal microscopy.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Role for Cholesterol as a Structural Effector of the Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor
Gregorio Fernández-Ballester,Jose Castresana,Asia M. Fernández,J.L.R. Arrondo,José A. Ferragut,José M. González-Ros +5 more
TL;DR: The addition of increasing amounts of cholesterol to the reconstituted bilayer of phospholipids other than phosphatidylcholine produces a progressive, complete recovery both in the control of cation channel function and in the infrared spectrum.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unfolding and Refolding in Vitro of a Tetrameric, α-Helical Membrane Protein: The Prokaryotic Potassium Channel KcsA†
Francisco N. Barrera,M. Lourdes Renart,M. Luisa Molina,José A. Poveda,José Antonio Encinar,Asia M. Fernández,José L. Neira,José M. González-Ros +7 more
TL;DR: These results are interpreted in terms of a protein and TFE concentration-dependent reversible equilibrium between the folded tetrameric protein and partly unfolded monomeric subunits, in which folding and oligomerization are seemingly coupled processes.
Journal ArticleDOI
A novel N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor open channel blocker with in vivo neuroprotectant activity.
Rosa Planells-Cases,Carmina Montoliu,Marc Humet,Asia M. Fernández,Carolina García-Martínez,Elvira Valera,Jaime M. Merino,Enrique Pérez-Payá,Angel Messeguer,Vicente Felipo,Antonio Ferrer-Montiel +10 more
TL;DR: Findings indicate that N-alkylglycine N20C is a novel, low molecular weight, moderate-affinity NMDA receptor open channel blocker with in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective activity, which, in due turn, may become a tolerated drug for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.
