Thinking ability is one of the skills that must be had by all people in facing the demands of the 21st century, namely critical thinking skills. This skill can be achieved by delivering the material more clear and objective. Thus, the purpose of this study is to know the effect of implementing blended PjBL integrated 21st century skills on students’ critical thinking skills. The sample of this study amounted to 39 students in the fifth semester of Biology Education at IAIN Palangka Raya with a non-equivalent control group design. The accumulation data of critical thinking skills was obtained by giving 20 items in the critical thinking domain in the form of pretest and posttest questions. The implementation of blended PjBL integrated 21st century skills is quite effective in the high-level class experimental class group, with the acquisition of N-gain = 56.75. This is reinforced by the results of hypothesis testing with the value of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 0.05. It can be concluded that the implementation of blended PjBL integrated 21st century skills has a significant effect on students' critical thinking skills. The findings of this study is an alternative integrative model innovation between blended PjBL and 21st century skills-based on student skill level

Analisis Keterampilan Berpikir Kritis Mahasiswa Melalui Model Blended-Project Based Learning Terintegrasi Keterampilan Abad 21 Berdasarkan Students Skill Level

This article addresses educational challenges posed by the future of work, examining “21st century skills”, their conception, assessment, and valorization. It focuses in particular on key soft skill competencies known as the “4Cs”: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. In a section on each C, we provide an overview of assessment at the level of individual performance, before focusing on the less common assessment of systemic support for the development of the 4Cs that can be measured at the institutional level (i.e., in schools, universities, professional training programs, etc.). We then present the process of official assessment and certification known as “labelization”, suggesting it as a solution both for establishing a publicly trusted assessment of the 4Cs and for promoting their cultural valorization. Next, two variations of the “International Institute for Competency Development’s 21st Century Skills Framework” are presented. The first of these comprehensive systems allows for the assessment and labelization of the extent to which development of the 4Cs is supported by a formal educational program or institution. The second assesses informal educational or training experiences, such as playing a game. We discuss the overlap between the 4Cs and the challenges of teaching and institutionalizing them, both of which may be assisted by adopting a dynamic interactionist model of the 4Cs—playfully entitled “Crea-Critical-Collab-ication”—for pedagogical and policy-promotion purposes. We conclude by briefly discussing opportunities presented by future research and new technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration: Assessment, Certification, and Promotion of 21st Century Skills for the Future of Work and Education

This qualitative within-individual case design study involved six adolescents (age 10–14 years) engaging in a think-aloud observational protocol to read two texts on climate change from contrasting viewpoints. The participants completed a prior knowledge assessment and survey of technology used to assess potential mediating factors. Survey and observational data are presented as participant profiles. Results illustrated the effect of participants’ background knowledge, emotional elicitation of text features, cognitive dissonance argument analysis due to the contrasting multimodal texts, and impact of visual images on participants’ comprehension. Our data analyses revealed that there is an interconnected and nuanced relationship amongst many text and individual factors when adolescents engage in critical reading of SSI multimodal texts. This research provides direction for future science education research that support learners in critical reading of complex socioscientific topics as presented in multimodal texts with adolescent learners.

Exploring Adolescents’ Critical Reading of Socioscientific Topics Using Multimodal Texts

This paper discusses political discourses as a resource for climate change education and the extent to which they can be used to promote critical thinking. To illustrate this, we present here an activity developed in the online course, Freirean Communicative Educational Situations for Climate Change Education, designed and developed as part of postdoctoral research at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, Brazil. The activity aimed to analyze the speeches of the Presidents of Colombia and Chile at the United Nations Climate Action Summit (2019) in a way which approached climate change as a socio-scientific issue. We argue that climate change education should not only involve learning about risk, adaptation, resilience, and basic scientific concepts, but also critical reflection on public policy and discourses and transformative content. This includes consideration of non-formal and informal communications and analysis of how power relations can restrict, motivate, or boost the impetus towards climate change education. These kinds of classroom activities enable teachers to work with a combination of core critical thinking skills, attitudes, and abilities, as well as discussing the details of science and scientific knowledge. This in turn enables the gap between the scientific and political aspects of climate change education to be bridged.
