Systems and methods for sharing annotations associated with an electronic document. The annotations are created by one or more annotation authors and are shared with one or more other users. A method includes determining frequently annotated portions of the electronic document and providing indicators within the electronic document of the frequently annotated portions. In one embodiment, frequently used words within the annotations are also indicated within the text of the electronic document. In addition, or in another embodiment, the annotations can be searched based on a user's location within the electronic document.

Systems and methods for collaboratively annotating electronic documents

Disclosed is a semantic user interface system that allows text information to be tagged with machine-readable IDs that are associated with concepts for conveying information without any ambiguity or without being hampered by the limitations of human languages. Typically, a plurality of vocabularies are stored across a network, and each vocabulary includes a plurality of machine-readable IDs each corresponding to a concept and at least one keyword corresponding to each machine-readable ID. An input interface accepts text information, selects those machine-readable IDs whose keywords match up with the text information, and returns a list of candidates each corresponding to one of the selected machine-readable IDs and including a corresponding description. The machine-readable IDs can carry information in the form of concepts without any ambiguity as opposed to text information. This system can be applied to web and database searches, publishing messages to selected subscribers, interfacing of applications software, machine translations and so forth.

System for semantically disambiguating text information

A GUI is disclosed including a set of visualization routines designed to improve display, visualization and manipulation of multi-dimensional data. Many of the routines combine 2D and 3D renderings with domain selecting criteria and stacking criteria with line segments connecting variable values between records in a given dataset or between corresponding variable values in records of related datasets. The GUI also employs active, persistent and slider variables to probe variable relationships, group relationships and dataset relationships.

Programs and methods for the display, analysis and manipulation of multi-dimensional data implemented on a computer

Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for managing annotations made for a variety of different type data objects manipulated (e.g., created, edited, and viewed) by a variety of different type applications are provided. Some embodiments allow users collaborating on a project to create, view, and edit annotations from within the applications used to manipulate the annotated data objects, which may facilitate and encourage the capturing and sharing of tacit knowledge through annotations. Further, annotations may be stored separate from the application data they describe, decoupling the tacit knowledge captured in the annotations from the applications used to manipulate the annotated data.

Universal annotation management system

A multi-variate data set is displayed in a plurality of multi-dimensional presentations on a computer having a graphical interface and a keyboard input. The data set includes a plurality of independent variables and, for each independent variable, a plurality of dependent variables. A computer displays the data set in parallel coordinate form on the graphical interface so that each dependent variable of the data set is presented as a series of values along an axis, plural axes arranged in parallel. The graphical interface provides a polygonal line which connects a value on each parallel axis and illustrates a relationship between an independent variable and the dependent variables appearing on each axis. The user input enables a user to superimpose on the graphical interface graphical delimiters either on or between two succeeding parallel axes. The graphical delimiters identify a data subset that includes at least one independent variable and adjacent dependent variables. In response to placement of the graphical delimiters, the computer modifies a presentation of any polygonal lines connecting the adjacent dependent variables and which lies between the graphical delimiters, and differentiates then from other polygonal lines which represent remaining data subsets of the data set. The computer further enables an illustration of the delimited data subset in Cartesian coordinates.

Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for managing global annotations made for data elements that may be instantiated (e.g., displayed) by a variety of different type applications are provided. By anchoring the global annotations to the data element, rather than the particular data source containing the data element at the time the data element was annotated, the annotation may be retrieved from any application that instantiates or displays it.
