Mechanical properties evaluation of sisal fibre reinforced polymer composites: A review

A review on the mechanical properties of hybrid fibers-reinforced polymer composite is presented in this article. Fiber-reinforced polymer composite has a lot of advantages such as high strength, low density, and ease of processing. Fiber-reinforced polymer composite has been used in many areas such as aerospace, automotive, and construction. Incorporation of two or more fibers into a single polymer matrix leads the development of hybrid composite. Hybridization can improve the mechanical properties of single fiber-reinforced polymer composite. This study shows that mechanical properties of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composite increase due to incorporation of comparably high elongation fibers.

Over recent years, enthusiasm towards the manufacturing of biopolymers has attracted considerable attention due to the rising concern about depleting resources and worsening pollution. Among the biopolymers available in the world, polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the highest biopolymers produced globally and thus, making it suitable for product commercialisation. Therefore, the effectiveness of natural fibre reinforced PLA composite as an alternative material to substitute the non-renewable petroleum-based materials has been examined by researchers. The type of fibre used in fibre/matrix adhesion is very important because it influences the biocomposites’ mechanical properties. Besides that, an outline of the present circumstance of natural fibre-reinforced PLA 3D printing, as well as its functions in 4D printing for applications of stimuli-responsive polymers were also discussed. This research paper aims to present the development and conducted studies on PLA-based natural fibre bio-composites over the last decade. This work reviews recent PLA-derived bio-composite research related to PLA synthesis and biodegradation, its properties, processes, challenges and prospects.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) Biocomposite: Processing, Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Applications.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polymer produced from lactic acid that has been chiefly utilized in biodegradable material and as a composite matrix material. PLA is a prominent biomaterial that is widely used to replace traditional petrochemical-based polymers in various applications owing environmental concerns. Green composites have gained greater attention as ecological consciousness has grown since they have the potential to be more appealing than conventional petroleum-based composites, which are toxic and nonbiodegradable. PLA-based composites with natural fiber have been extensively utilized in a variety of applications, from packaging to medicine, due to their biodegradable, recyclable, high mechanical strength, low toxicity, good barrier properties, friendly processing, and excellent characteristics. A summary of natural fibers, green composites, and PLA, along with their respective properties, classification, functionality, and different processing methods, are discussed to discover the natural fiber-reinforced PLA composite material development for a wide range of applications. This work also emphasizes the research and properties of PLA-based green composites, PLA blend composites, and PLA hybrid composites over the past few years. PLA’s potential as a strong material in engineering applications areas is addressed. This review also covers issues, challenges, opportunities, and perspectives in developing and characterizing PLA-based green composites.

Natural Fiber-Reinforced Polylactic Acid, Polylactic Acid Blends and Their Composites for Advanced Applications

The work focuses on the influencing effect of fiber surface treatment by BP towards mechanical properties of BSF reinforced PLA composites. BSF were treated by BP to improve the adhesion between fibres and matrix. BSF (30 wt %) reinforced PLA (70 wt %) hybrid composites were fabricated by means of twin screw extrusion followed by injection molding process. Tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus were tested by means of UTM. The morphological analysis of the untreated and treated BSF reinforced PLA composites in comparison with virgin PLA was carried out by SEM to examine the existence of interfacial adhesion between BSF and PLA. The resultant data reveals that treated BSF restricts the motion of the PLA matrix due to better wettability and bonding. Consequently, mechanical properties like tensile and flexural moduli of BSF reinforced PLA composites were enhanced in comparison to virgin PLA and untreated BSF reinforced PLA composites. The results are discussed in detail.

Bio-composites: Development and mechanical characterization of banana/sisal fibre reinforced poly lactic acid (PLA) hybrid composites

In recent years, the fiber reinforced composites have been used more in tribological applications where the sliding surfaces requires a high wear resistance and a low co-efficient of friction. The growth of GFRP is significantly higher than that of steel. No engineer or designer can ignore the growth of GFRP, but the decision to use a new material is difficult, yet important. The comparative tribological performance of short and long glass fiber-epoxy composites, under varying load and sliding velocities, is reported in this investigation. Besides conventional weighing, the coefficient of friction, contact temperature, and wear rate were determined. The worn surfaces of the specimens were examined by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The wear mechanisms and the transitions that govern the tribological behavior of the composites between them are discussed in detail. It was found that the epoxy reinforced with a long glass fiber exhibited a reduced wear rate than the short glass fiber.
