Based on fluid-dynamic and many-particle (car-following) simulations of traffic flows in (urban) networks, we study the problem of coordinating incompatible traffic flows at intersections. Inspired by the observation of self-organized oscillations of pedestrian flows at bottlenecks [D. Helbing and P. Moln\'ar, Phys. Eev. E 51 (1995) 4282--4286], we propose a self-organization approach to traffic light control. The problem can be treated as multi-agent problem with interactions between vehicles and traffic lights. Specifically, our approach assumes a priority-based control of traffic lights by the vehicle flows themselves, taking into account short-sighted anticipation of vehicle flows and platoons. The considered local interactions lead to emergent coordination patterns such as ``green waves'' and achieve an efficient, decentralized traffic light control. While the proposed self-control adapts flexibly to local flow conditions and often leads to non-cyclical switching patterns with changing service sequences of different traffic flows, an almost periodic service may evolve under certain conditions and suggests the existence of a spontaneous synchronization of traffic lights despite the varying delays due to variable vehicle queues and travel times. The self-organized traffic light control is based on an optimization and a stabilization rule, each of which performs poorly at high utilizations of the road network, while their proper combination reaches a superior performance. The result is a considerable reduction not only in the average travel times, but also of their variation. Similar control approaches could be applied to the coordination of logistic and production processes.

Self-control of traffic lights and vehicle flows in urban road networks

Reviewed were the problems and methods for control of chaos, which in the last decade was the subject of intensive studies. Consideration was given to their application in various scientific fields such as mechanics (control of pendulums, beams, plates, friction), physics (control of turbulence, lasers, chaos in plasma, and propagation of the dipole domains), chemistry, biology, ecology, economics, and medicine, as well as in various branches of engineering such as mechanical systems (control of vibroformers, microcantilevers, cranes, and vessels), spacecraft, electrical and electronic systems, communication systems, information systems, and chemical and processing industries (stirring of fluid flows and processing of free-flowing materials)).

Control of Chaos: Methods and Applications. II. Applications

We show how to treat supply networks as physical transport problems governed by balance equations and equations for the adaptation of production speeds. Although the nonlinear behavior is different, the linearized set of coupled differential equations is formally related to those of mechanical or electrical oscillator networks. Supply networks possess interesting features due to their complex topology and directed links. We derive analytical conditions for absolute and convective instabilities. The empirically observed ``bullwhip effect'' in supply chains is explained as a form of convective instability based on resonance effects. Moreover, it is generalized to arbitrary supply networks. Their related eigenvalues are usually complex, depending on the network structure (even without loops). Therefore, their generic behavior is characterized by damped or growing oscillations. We also show that regular distribution networks possess two negative eigenvalues only, but perturbations generate a spectrum of complex eigenvalues.

Physics, stability, and dynamics of supply networks.

Due to delays in the adaptation of production or delivery rates, supply chains can be dynamically unstable with respect to perturbations in the consumption rate, which is known as “bull-whip effect”. Here, we study several conceivable production strategies to stabilize supply chains, which is expressed by different specifications of the management function controlling the production speed in dependence of the stock levels. In particular, we will investigate, whether the reaction to stock levels of other producers or suppliers has a stabilizing effect. We will also demonstrate that the anticipation of future stock levels can stabilize the supply system, given the forecast horizon τ is long enough. To show this, we derive linear stability conditions and carry out simulations for different control strategies. The results indicate that the linear stability analysis is a helpful tool for the judgement of the stabilization effect, although unexpected deviations can occur in the non-linear regime. There are also signs of phase transitions and chaotic behavior, but this remains to be investigated more thoroughly in the future.

Stability Analysis and Stabilization Strategies for Linear Supply Chains

A chaotic model of a production flow called the switched arrival system is extended to include switching times and maintenance. The probability distribution of the chaotic return times is calculated. Scheduling maintenance, loss of production due to switching, and control of the chaotic dynamics is discussed. A coupling parameter to couple switched arrival systems serially, based on lost production, is identified. Simulations of three parallel and three serial levels were performed. Global synchronization of the switching frequencies between serial levels is achieved. An analytic model allows one to predict the self-balancing properties of the serial system.
