The problem of wave-front estimation from wave-front slope measurements has been examined from a least-squares curve fitting model point of view. It is shown that the slope measurement sampling geometry influences the model selection for the phase estimation. Successive over-relaxation (SOR) is employed to numerically solve the exact zonal phase estimation problem. A new zonal phase gradient model is introduced and its error propagator, which relates the mean-square wave-front error to the noisy slope measurements, has been compared with two previously used models. A technique for the rapid extraction of phase aperture functions is presented. Error propagation properties for modal estimation are evaluated and compared with zonal estimation results.

Wavefront reconstruction using iterative Fourier transforms

It is shown that a wave front, or in general any scalar two-dimensional function, can be reconstructed from its discrete differences by a simple multiplicative filtering operation in the spatial-frequency domain by using complex exponentials as basis functions in a modal expansion. Various difference-sampling geometries are analyzed. The difference data are assumed to be corrupted by random, additive noise of zero mean. The derived algorithms yield unbiased reconstructions for finite data arrays. The error propagation from the noise on the difference data to the reconstructed wave fronts is minimal in a least-squares sense. The spatial distribution of the reconstruction error over the array and the dependence of the mean reconstruction error on the array size are determined. The algorithms are computationally efficient, noniterative, and suitable for large arrays since the required number of mathematical operations for a reconstruction is approximately proportional to the number of data points if fast-Fourier-transform algorithms are employed.

Interferometric imaging in optical astronomy

Lateral shearing interferometry is a promising reference-free measurement technique for optical wave-front reconstruction. The wave front under study is coherently superposed by a laterally sheared copy of itself, and from the interferogram difference measurements of the wave front are obtained. From these difference measurements the wave front is then reconstructed. Recently, several new and efficient algorithms for evaluating lateral shearing interferograms have been suggested. So far, however, all evaluation methods are somewhat restricted, e.g., assume a priori knowledge of the wave front under study, or assume small shears, and so on. Here a new, to our knowledge, approach for the evaluation of lateral shearing interferograms is presented, which is based on an extension of the difference measurements. This so-called natural extension allows for reconstruction of that part of the underlying wave front whose information is contained in the given difference measurements. The method is not restricted to small shears and allows for high lateral resolution to be achieved. Since the method uses discrete Fourier analysis, the reconstructions can be efficiently calculated. Furthermore, it is shown that, by application of the method to the analysis of two shearing interferograms with suitably chosen shears, exact reconstruction of the underlying wave front at all evaluation points is obtained up to an arbitrary constant. The influence of noise on the results obtained by this reconstruction procedure is investigated in detail, and its stability is shown. Finally, applications to simulated measurements are presented. The results demonstrate high-quality reconstructions for single shearing interferograms and exact reconstructions for two shearing interferograms.

Solution to the shearing problem

This paper describes a fast direct algorithm for obtaining least-squares phase estimates from arrays of noisy phase differences. The algorithm uses the fast Fourier transform to diagonalize and decouple the system of equations which results from the application of the least-squares criterion. It is accurate and stable, and is perhaps an order of magnitude faster than the best iterative method. The effectiveness of the algorithm has been demonstrated by using it in connection with the Knox–Thompson speckle-imaging procedure to restore an optical object perturbed by simulated atmospheric turbulence. Representative results are discussed in the paper.
