In this contribution, authors present a review on the state-of-the-art in the utilization of industrial and agricultural waste materials for the development of metal–matrix composites (MMCs), providing, through the judicious analysis of an ample and varied references source – from the oldest to the newest ones – an insight into the challenges and opportunities for the exploitation to their full potential. In addition to its topicality, the novelty of this contribution lies in the presentation of key statistical, technical, and property-related information of a comprehensive variety of waste materials classed into two main groups, namely, fly ash reinforced MMCs and MMCs derived from other waste materials. Development of metal-matrix composites from industrial/agricultural waste materials and their derivatives

Cenospheres in the range of 30–50 vol.% were used as space holders for making syntactic aluminum foam having density 1.5–1.9 gm/cc using stir-casting technique. The synthesized syntactic foam (SF) was characterized in terms of microstructures, hardness and compressive deformation behaviour. It was noted that the SF behaves like a high strength aluminium foam under compressive deformation exhibiting flat plateau region in the stress–strain curves. The plateau stress of SF decreases with cenosphere volume fraction vis-a-vis porosity following a power law relationship. But, the densification strain increases linearly with cenosphere volume fraction.

Development of high performance lightweight aluminum alloy/SiC hollow sphere syntactic foams and compressive characterization at quasi-static and high strain rates

The compressive behaviour of eight different metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSFs) are investigated and presented. The results showed that the engineering factors as chemical compositions of the matrix material, the size of the microballoons, the previously applied heat treatment and the temperature of the compression tests have significant effects on the compressive properties. The smaller microballoons with thinner wall ensured higher compressive strength due to their more flawless microstructure and better mechanical stability. According to the heat treatments, the T6 treatments were less effective than expected; the parameters of the treatment should be further optimised. The elevated temperature tests revealed ∼30% drop in the compressive strength. However, the strength remained high enough for structural applications; therefore MMSFs are good choices for light structural parts working at elevated or room temperature. The chemical composition – microballoon type – heat treatment combinations give good potential for tailoring the compressive characteristics of MMSFs.
