Modern global managers are required to possess a set of competencies or multiple intelligences in order to meet pressing business challenges. Hence, expanding global managers’ competencies is becoming an important issue. Many scholars and specialists have proposed various competency models containing a list of required competencies. But it is hard for someone to master a broad set of competencies at the same time. Here arises an imperative issue on how to enrich global managers’ competencies by way of segmenting a set of competencies into some portions in order to facilitate competency development with a stepwise mode. To solve this issue involving the vagueness of human judgments, we have proposed an effective method combining fuzzy logic and Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) to segment required competencies for better promoting the competency development of global managers. Additionally, an empirical study is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed method.

Discusses the importance of total quality maintenance (TQMain), considering that the common thread in achieving and maintaining high overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is the availability of improved manufacturing processes capable of producing quality products without interruption. Implementing just‐in‐time (JIT) philosophy demands healthy processes. Any interruption of the line caused by any equipment malfunction or failure will result in a major disruption of output or even line or factory shutdown. Thus, an effective maintenance programme should be evolved to provide the required availability of machinery and output quality. A new concept of condition‐based maintenance, total quality maintenance, is presented. It aims to maintain not only machinery but all the elements constituting a manufacturing process, e.g. production/ operation, environmental condition, personnel, methods, material, quality control. TQMain is a result of establishing a common database through integrating the maintenance program with other plant programs to form an overall plant information technology system. Identifying and “eliminating” quality deviations and failure causes at early stages, and extensive use of data feedback are the suggested tools to accomplish continuous improvements and to assure high quality products.

Enhancing a company's profitability and competitiveness using integrated vibration-based maintenance: A case study

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of maintenance in improving company's competitiveness and profitability. In the first part the paper aims to discuss the potential improvement areas from the company perspective. Second part of this paper examines maintenance impact on company's business. Design/methodology/approach – An empirical case study was utilized aiming to provide an understanding of the role of maintenance in improving company's business. The empirical data for this study were collected from a Slovenian textile company. A gap analysis was used in order to address the research problem and to identify potential improvement areas. Findings – Based on the gap analysis, the results suggest that from respondents’ points of view, maintenance practices related to condition-based maintenance approach represent the highest opportunity for improvement.
