A detailed thermodynamic analysis of [C4mim][BF4]+ water as a case study to model ionic liquid aqueous solutions

Room-temperature ionic liquids are salts with a melting point close to or below room temperature. They form liquids composed in the majority of ions. This gives these materials the potential to behave very differently when they are used as solvents compared to conventional molecular liquids. The search for their application is growing in every area of analytical chemistry—electrochemistry, chromatography, electrophoresis, and even mass spectrometry. The literature on ionic liquids is growing almost exponentially. The basis for this activity is the easy preparation of salts with different ion constituents. This ability might best be described as the “chemical tunability” of ionic liquids, a class of solvents with members possessing similar physical properties but having different chemical behavior. Their good solvating properties, together with large spectral transparency, make ionic liquids suitable solvents for spectroscopic measurements. Ionic Liquids in Chemical Analysis

This work focuses on the extension of group parameters of the UNIFAC model to systems with ionic liquids. The new group parameters for ionic liquids were obtained by means of correlating the activity coefficients of solutes at infinite dilution in ionic liquids at different temperatures. The group parameters for 12 main groups and 24 subgroups were added into the current UNIFAC parameter matrix. It was verified that the new group parameters can be used not only for predicting the vapor−liquid equilibria of the systems with ionic liquids at finite concentration, but also for screening the suitable ionic liquids in separation processes. Since there have been only a limited number of functional groups for ionic liquids included in the UNIFAC model, the future development of this predictive model will still require much more accurate experimental data.

UNIFAC Model for Ionic Liquids

Extractive distillation is commonly used for the separation of azeotropic or close-boiling mixtures in the chemical industry. During the past decade, the use of ionic liquids (ILs) as entrainers has received considerable attention due to their unique advantages when applied in extractive distillation. This work is devoted to providing an easy-to-read and comprehensive review on the recent progress made by chemical engineers, focusing on the issues of predictive thermodynamic models, structure-property relations, separation mechanisms, and process simulation and optimization. This review spans from the molecular level to the industrial scale, to provide a theoretical insight into the molecular interactions between ILs and the components to be separated. Moreover, a comprehensive database on the vapor–liquid equilibria and activity coefficients at infinite dilution concerning ILs is provided as Supporting Information. Extractive distillation with ionic liquids: A review

The activity coefficients at infinite dilution, , for both polar and nonpolar solutes in an ionic liquid, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([HMIM+][BF4-]), have been determined by gas−liquid chromatography at T = (298.15 K and 323.15 K). This work is part of our research focus on ionic liquids. The selectivity values have been calculated at T = 298.15 K, and the results indicate that the ionic liquid, [HMIM+][BF4-], should be a good solvent for separation of benzene and alkanes. The partial molar excess enthalpy values at infinite dilution have also been determined at T = 298.15 K and have been discussed in terms of intermolecular interactions. The results have been discussed in terms of measurements of , using other ionic liquids, taken from the recent literature.
