Reactivity of Surface Species in Heterogeneous Catalysts Probed by In Situ X-ray Absorption Techniques

This historical account of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy from the origin to 1975 begins with the first observations of X-ray absorption edges and the experimental setups used at the turn of the century. Then, the discovery of XAFS and Kossel's early interpretation are discussed. A close look is taken at the three outstanding papers written by Kronig to explain XAFS in solids and molecules. Petersen's development of XAFS in molecules and Smoluchowski's investigation of XAFS in crystals during the thirties are reviewed. Then, the Japanese and Soviet contributions to X-ray absorption spectroscopy up to the sixties are described. We conclude with the advent of the present understanding of XAFS developed in the early seventies. Although many experiments are presented, we emphasize the conceptual evolution of the interpretation of XAFS, including false steps and overlooked works.

Quantitative structural determination of active sites from in situ and operando XANES spectra: From standard ab initio simulations to chemometric and machine learning approaches

Das charakteristische R6ntgenspektrum wurde in den ersten Jahren nach den grundlegenden Arbeiten yon MOSELEY als reine Atomeigenschaft betrachtet. Im Gegensatz zu den optischen Spektren ist das R6ntgenspektrum in der Tat vom physikalischen und chemischen Zustand des emittierenden oder absorbierenden Elementes im allgemeinen praktisch unabh~tngig. Die beim Einbau eines Atoms in einen Molekeloder Kristallverband eintretenden Energie/inderungen der Valenzelektronen yon gr6Benordnungsm~tl3ig einigen Elektronenvolt sind im Vergleich zur Energie der R6ntgenstrahlen klein und wirken sich daher auf das R6ntgenspektrum in der Regel nicht meBbar aus. Es zeigte sich jedoch bald, dal3 die Rfickwirkung des Bindungszustandes des Atoms auf das R6ntgenspektrum schon mit einfachen Mitteln beobaehtet werden kann, wenn man zu Elementen niederer Ordnungszahl fibergeht. Sofern es sich dabei um einen ~3bergang im Atom handelt, bet dem ein ~ul3eres Niveau im Spiel ist, l~13t sicb ein solcher EinfluB ohne weiteres verstehen. Ob und bei welchen Ordnungszahlen er beobachtbar wird, ist lediglieh eine Frage der Dispersion. Die genauere Untersuchung dieser Erscheinungen, die um 1925 einsetzte, hat ergeben, dab man aus den beobachteten spektralen Ver~inderungen in vielen F~illen wertvolle Aussagen t~ber die Zust/inde der Valenzelektronen gewinnen kann. W~hrend die normalen R6ntgenspektren mittlerer und kleiner Wellenl~nge den 'Bau des Innem der Atomhfille erkermen lassen, erlauben die langwelligen R6ntgenspektren Rfickschltisse auf die peripheren Bereiche des Atoms. Naturgem/iB sind r6ntgenspektroskopische Untersuchungen im wesentlichen auf den Festk6rper beschr/inkt. Aber gerade fiir diesen ergeben" sich von den verschiedensten Gesichtspunkten aus Fragen beztiglich der Valenzelektronenzust~inde, so dab die Spektroskopie der langwelligen R6ntgenstrahlen in den letzten Jahren steigende Bedeutung gewonnen hat1).

Röntgenspektrum und Bindungszustand

The theoretical fundamentals of extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy are discussed. This method makes it possible to obtain short-range order parameters for multicomponent amorphous and quasicrystalline media with a high accuracy. Methods of analysis of EXAFS spectra with allowance for the effects of multiple scattering are described. Experimental setups implementing EXAFS spectroscopy on synchrotron radiation beams are considered and the requirements on monochromatization of radiation beams are given. A brief description of the energy-dispersive EXAFS spectrometer at the Kurchatov Synchrotron Radiation Source is given. The results of experimental investigations of tungsten and molybdenum oxides and fullerides are reported.
