A theory for combined differential and common-mode normalized power waves is developed in terms of even and odd mode impedances and propagation constants for a microwave coupled line system. These are related to even and odd-mode terminal currents and voltages. Generalized s-parameters of a two-port are developed for waves propagating in several coupled modes. The two-port s-parameters form a 4-by-4 matrix containing differential-mode, common-mode, and cross-mode s-parameters. A special case of the theory allows the use of uncoupled transmission lines to measure the coupled-mode waves. Simulations verify the concept of these mixed-mode s-parameters, and demonstrate conversion from mode to mode for asymmetric microwave structures. >

Combined differential and common-mode scattering parameters: theory and simulation

Different partial discharge (PD) detection and measurement procedures suitable for use on cables, capacitors, transformers and rotating machines are examined and compared. Both narrow and wide bandwidth PD detectors are considered; particular attention is given in regard to their suitability to different types of electrical apparatus and cable specimens under test as well as their applicability to discharge site location and their capability to detect different forms of PD. A rather substantial portion of the discussion is devoted to the use of intelligent machines as applied to PD pattern recognition in terms of either PD pulse-height/discharge epoch (phase) distributions or discharge pulse shape attributes.

Partial discharges. Their mechanism, detection and measurement

This paper describes the theory of operation of coupled strip line tilt ers and directional couplers, and presents information from which these components may be easily designed. Low-pass, band-pass, all-pass, and all-stop filter characteristics are obtained from these coupled lines either by placing open or short circuits at two of the four available terminal pairs, or by interconnecting two of the terminal pairs. Directional couplers having perfect dk-ectivity and constant input impedance at all frequencies, and for all degrees of coupliig, are obtained by placing equal resistive loads at each of the four terminal pairs.

Coupled-Strip-Transmission-Line Filters and Directional Couplers

Terminal characteristic parameters for a uniform coupled-line four-port for the general case of an asymmetric, inhomogeneous system are derived in this paper. The parameters (impedance, admittance, etc.) are derived in terms of two independent modes that propagate in two uniformly coupled propagating systems. The four-port parameters derived are of the same form as those obtained for the symmetric case resulting in similar port equivalent circuits for various circuit configurations considered by Zysman and Johnson. The results obtained should be quite useful in designing asymmetric coupled-line circuits in an inhomogeneous medium for various known applications.

Asymmetric Coupled Transmission Lines in an Inhomogeneous Medium

When two circuits such as filters or transmission lines are coupled together by means of distributed reactances which can vary sinusoidally in time and space, energy can be converted between waves of different frequencies in a variety of ways. If the waves on the two transmission lines are characterized by frequencies ω1 and ω2 and phase constants β1 and β2, while the coupling reactances vary as ω=ω1−ω2 and β=β1−β2+Δβ, power P1 at ω1 is converted into power P2 at ω2 and vice versa in a manner reminiscent of waves on coupled passive circuits, except that a relationship (P2/ω2)=(P1/ω1) is obeyed. If the group velocities on both transmission lines are in the same direction, the direction of power transfer reverses periodically with distance. Parametric Amplification and Frequency Mixing in Propagating Circuits

The natural coupling between parallel transmission lines is inherently directional. Very simple and cheap directional couplers can be made which utilize this effect. By introducing appropriate variation of coupling with distance a wide variety of transmission characteristics may be realized, including high-pass (ideally, infinite bandwidth) characteristics. The coupled lines may be of equal or different impedance. Thus, a simple configuration of four wires (or two wires and ground) can serve simultaneously as a directional coupler, filter, and transformer.
