TL;DR: It is shown that indefinite persistence of populations is possible over a wide range of parameter settings, even though the cells all tend to rapid extinction in isolation, and persistence of locally unstable Lotka-Volterra predator-prey systems in both forms is shown to be impossible.

TL;DR: An approach to operating system modelling is described in which the simultaneous and synergistic application of tractable queueing theory models and their simulatable refinements is essential.
Abstract: An approach to operating system modelling is described in which the simultaneous and synergistic application of tractable queueing theory models and their simulatable refinements is essential. Cross checking of these models against each other and against the real system results in a degree of confirmation not achievable by relying on either analytic or simulation models alone.

TL;DR: There is increasing recognition that simulation modelling of multifaceted systems cannot be accomplished successfully within the framework of a "oneshot" finite lifetime simulation project but must rather be viewed as an ongoing activity supported by the appropriate computational facilities.
Abstract: There is increasing recognition that simulation modelling of multifaceted systems cannot be accomplished successfully within the framework of a "oneshot" finite lifetime simulation project but must rather be viewed as an ongoing activity supported by the appropriate computational facilities [1]. The latter view requires the development of advanced modelling concepts [2], and the theory on which to base them [3]. Such developments should be coordinated with the software engineering design of integrated modelling systems to implement such advanced concepts [4,5].

TL;DR: The canonical realization of general time systems by dynamical systems is discussed employing the notation and definitions of Takahara and Mesarovic to provide conditions under which a time system is guaranteed to have a canonical representation from within a class of possible realizations.
