Rod Borup is a Team Leader in the fuel cell program at Los Alamos National Lab in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He received his B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1988 and his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1993. He has worked on fuel cell technology since 1994, working in the areas of hydrogen production and PEM fuel cell stack components. He has been awarded 12 U.S. patents, authored over 40 papers related to fuel cell technology, and presented over 50 oral papers at national meetings. His current main research area is related to water transport in PEM fuel cells and PEM fuel cell durability. Recently, he was awarded the 2005 DOE Hydrogen Program R&D Award for the most significant R&D contribution of the year for his team's work in fuel cell durability and was the Principal Investigator for the 2004 Fuel Cell Seminar (San Antonio, TX, USA) Best Poster Award. Jeremy Meyers is an Assistant Professor of materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where his research focuses on the development of electrochemical energy systems and materials. Prior to joining the faculty at Texas, Jeremy workedmore » as manager of the advanced transportation technology group at UTC Power, where he was responsible for developing new system designs and components for automotive PEM fuel cell power plants. While at UTC Power, Jeremy led several customer development projects and a DOE-sponsored investigation into novel catalysts and membranes for PEM fuel cells. Jeremy has coauthored several papers on key mechanisms of fuel cell degradation and is a co-inventor of several patents. In 2006, Jeremy and several colleagues received the George Mead Medal, UTC's highest award for engineering achievement, and he served as the co-chair of the Gordon Research Conference on fuel cells. Jeremy received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University. Bryan Pivovar received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1994. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota in 2000 under the direction of Profs. Ed Cussler and Bill Smyrl, studying transport properties in fuel cell electrolytes. He continued working in the area of polymer electrolyte fuel cells at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a post-doc (2000-2001), as a technical staff member (2001-2005), and in his current position as a team leader (2005-present). In this time, Bryan's research has expanded to include further aspects of fuel cell operation, including electrodes, subfreezing effects, alternative polymers, hydroxide conductors, fuel cell interfaces, impurities, water transport, and high-temperature membranes. Bryan has served at various levels in national and international conferences and workshops, including organizing a DOE sponsored workshop on freezing effects in fuel cells and an ARO sponsored workshop on alkaline membrane fuel cells, and he was co-chair of the 2007 Gordon Research Conference on Fuel Cells. Minoru Inaba is a Professor at the Department of Molecular Science and Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Doshisha University, Japan. He received his B.Sc. from the Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University, in 1984 and his M.Sc. in 1986 and his Dr. Eng. in 1995 from the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. He has worked on electrochemical energy conversion systems including fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries at Kyoto University (1992-2002) and at Doshisha University (2002-present). His primary research interest is the durability of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), in particular, membrane degradation, and he has been involved in NEDO R&D research projects on PEFC durability since 2001. He has authored over 140 technical papers and 30 review articles. Kenichiro Ota is a Professor of the Chemical Energy Laboratory at the Graduate School of Engineering, Yokohama National University, Japan. He received his B.S.E. in Applied Chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1968 and his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1973. He has worked on hydrogen energy and fuel cells since 1974, working on materials science for fuel cells and water electrolysis. He has published more than 150 original papers, 70 review papers, and 50 scientific books. Scientific aspects of polymer electrolyte fuel cell durability and degradation.

Fuel cells have the potential to become an important energy conversion technology. Research efforts directed toward the widespread commercialization of fuel cells have accelerated in light of ongoing efforts to develop a hydrogen-based energy economy to reduce dependence on foreign oil and decrease pollution. Proton exchange membrane (also termed “polymer electrolyte membrane”) (PEM) fuel cells employing a solid polymer electrolyte to separate the fuel from the oxidant were first deployed in the Gemini space program in the early 1960s using cells that were extremely expensive and had short lifetimes due to the oxidative degradation of their sulfonated polystyrene-divinylbenzene copolymer membranes. These cells were considered too costly and short-lived for real-world applications. The commercialization of Nafion by DuPont in the late 1960s helped to demonstrate the potential interest in terrestrial applications for fuel cells, although its major focus was in chloroalkali processes. PEM fuel cells are being developed for three main applications: automotive, stationary, and portable power. Each of these applications has its unique operating conditions and material requirements. Common themes critical to all high performance proton exchange membranes include (1) high protonic conductivity, (2) low electronic conductivity, (3) low permeability to fuel and oxidant, (4) low water transport through diffusion and electro-osmosis, (5) oxidative and hydrolytic stability, (6) good mechanical properties in both the dry and hydrated states, (7) cost, and (8) capability for fabrication into membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). Nearly all existing membrane materials for PEM fuel cells rely on absorbed water and its interaction with acid groups to produce protonic conductivity. Due to the large fraction of absorbed water in the membrane, both mechanical properties and water transport become key issues. Devising systems that can conduct protons with little or no water is perhaps the greatest challenge for new membrane materials. Specifically, for automotive applications the U.S. Department of Energy has currently established a guideline of 120 °C and 50% relative humidity as target operating conditions, and a goal of 0.1 S/cm for the protonic conductivity of the membrane. New membranes that have significantly reduced methanol permeability and water transport (through diffusion and electro-osmotic drag) are required for portable power oriented direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), where a liquid methanol fuel highly diluted in water is used at generally <90 °C as the source of protons. Unreacted methanol at the anode can diffuse through the membrane and react at the cathode, lowering the voltage efficiency of the cell and reducing the system’s fuel efficiency. The methanol is usually delivered to the anode as a dilute, for example, 1 M (or less), solution (3.2 wt %), and relatively thick Nafion 117 (1100 EW, 7 mil ∼ 178 μm thick) is used to reduce methanol crossover. The dilute methanol feed increases the system’s complexity and reduces the energy density of the fuel, while the thick Nafion membrane increases the resistive losses of the cell, especially when compared to the thinner membranes that are used in hydrogen/air systems. Alternative Polymer Systems for Proton Exchange Membranes (PEMs)

The state-of-the-art of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology is based on perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer membranes operating at a typical temperature of 80 °C. Some of the key issues and shortcomings of the PFSA-based PEMFC technology are briefly discussed. These include water management, CO poisoning, hydrogen, reformate and methanol as fuels, cooling, and heat recovery. As a means to solve these shortcomings, high-temperature polymer electrolyte membranes for operation above 100 °C are under active development. This treatise is devoted to a review of the area encompassing modified PFSA membranes, alternative sulfonated polymer and their composite membranes, and acid−base complex membranes. New soluble polyimides were prepared from a series of diamines and a tetracarboxylic dianhydride with a benzhydrol unit, 3,3‘,4,4‘-benzhydrol tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BHTDA), by one-step method polymerization. The diamines containing flexible units, bulky substituents, and/or noncoplanar conformation unit were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding bisphenol precursors and p-chloronitrobenzene, followed by catalytic reduction of the dinitro compounds. The polyimides obtained were soluble in various solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, pyridine, γ-butyrolactone, m-cresol, and even tetrahydrofuran except for polymer PId. The polymers were amorphous and had number-average molecular weight (Mn) in the range (3.0−10.2) × 104. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the polymers ranged from 268 to 341 °C. In the field of high thermomechanical performance polymers, linear and thermosetting systems offer complementary properties. Among the thermosetting materials, BMIs and BNIs have been extensively studied and are now commercially available. In this chapter, firstly the main preparation and characterization methods are reviewed, and then the chemistry of the polymerization processes is discussed for both families. For the BMIs, due to the electrophilic character of their double bond, different polymerization pathways have been published, which is not the case for BNIs. Special attention has been paid to thermal polymerization which has already been used in industrial achievements; however, on the other hand, the structure of these materials has been considered for the purpose of establishing relationships between processability, stability and thermomechanical properties.
