The chemistry of graphene oxide

Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. The hydrogen bond is the most important of all directional intermolecular interactions. It is operative in determining molecular conformation, molecular aggregation, and the function of a vast number of chemical systems ranging from inorganic to biological. Research into hydrogen bonds experienced a stagnant period in the 1980s, but re-opened around 1990, and has been in rapid development since then. In terms of modern concepts, the hydrogen bond is understood as a very broad phenomenon, and it is accepted that there are open borders to other effects. There are dozens of different types of X-H.A hydrogen bonds that occur commonly in the condensed phases, and in addition there are innumerable less common ones. Dissociation energies span more than two orders of magnitude (about 0.2-40 kcal mol(-1)). Within this range, the nature of the interaction is not constant, but its electrostatic, covalent, and dispersion contributions vary in their relative weights. The hydrogen bond has broad transition regions that merge continuously with the covalent bond, the van der Waals interaction, the ionic interaction, and also the cation-pi interaction. All hydrogen bonds can be considered as incipient proton transfer reactions, and for strong hydrogen bonds, this reaction can be in a very advanced state. In this review, a coherent survey is given on all these matters.

The hydrogen bond in the solid state.

The transition metal dichalcogenides are about 60 in number. Two-thirds of these assume layer structures. Crystals of such materials can be cleaved down to less than 1000 A and are then transparent in the region of direct band-to-band transitions. The transmission spectra of the family have been correlated group by group with the wide range of electrical and structural data available to yield useful working band models that are in accord with a molecular orbital approach. Several special topics have arisen; these include exciton screening, d-band formation, and the metal/insulator transition; also magnetism and superconductivity in such compounds. High pressure work seems to offer the possibility for testing the recent theory of excitonic insulators.

Copper is an essential trace element in living systems, present in the parts per million concentration range. It is a key cofactor in a diverse array of biological oxidation-reduction reactions. These involve either outer-sphere electron transfer, as in the blue copper proteins and the Cu{sub A} site of cytochrome oxidase and nitrous oxide redutase, or inner-sphere electron transfer in the binding, activation, and reduction of dioxygen, superoxide, nitrite, and nitrous oxide. Copper sites have historically been divided into three classes based on their spectroscopic features, which reflect the geometric and electronic structure of the active site: type 1 (T1) or blue copper, type 2 (T2) or normal copper, and type 3 (T3) or coupled binuclear copper centers. 428 refs.

Die isotypen zweikernigen Komplexverbindungen [(BMIK)Pt(α-Pyridonat)2Pt(BMIK)](NO3)2 · 4H2O (1) (P1; a = 12,197(5) A, b = 12,505(5) A, c = 12,866(5) A, α = 88,17(3)°, β = 73,55(3)°, γ = 69,84(3)°; Z = 2) und [(BMIK)Pd(α-Pyridonat)2Pd(BMIK)](NO3)2 · 4H2O (2) (a = 12,408(3) A, b = 12,660(3) A, c = 12,913(3) A, α = 89,55(3)°, β = 74,59(2)°, γ = 68,68(2)°) wurden durch Reaktion von [Pt(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2 bzw. [Pd(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2 mit α-Pyridon in wasriger Losung synthetisiert und als rote luftstabile Kristalle isoliert (BMIK = Bis(N-methylimidazol-2-yl)keton). Zur Synthese von Mischkristallen von 2 mit dem Heterometall-komplex [(BMIK)Pd(α-Pyridonat)2Pt(BMIK)](NO3)2 · 4H2O (3) (a = 12,430(4) A, b = 12,648(3) A, c = 12,907(4) A, α = 89,64(2)°, β = 74,57(2)°, γ = 68,65(2)°) wurde zunachst α-Pyridon mit [Pd(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2 im Molverhaltnis 2:1 umgesetzt, und im Anschlus wurde [Pt(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2 zugegeben. Die dinuklearen Kationen bestehen aus zwei M(BMIK)-Einheiten (M = Pd, Pt), die uber die N- und O-Atome des α-Pyridonats verbruckt sind, wobei sich eine Kopf-Kopf-Anordnung der heterocyclischen Ringe ergibt. Der intramolekulare Metall—Metall-Abstand liegt zwischen 2,840 A und 2,860 A, bei intermolekularen Abstanden im Bereich zwischen 4,762 A und 4,837 A. Die Koordination aller Metallato-me ist quadratisch-planar, wobei die Koordinationsebenen innerhalb einer dimeren Einheit leicht gegeneinander geneigt sind. Neben den Rontgenstrukturanalysen wurden die Komplexe durch 1H-NMR- sowie durch 195Pt-NMR-Spektren charakterisiert.

The isotypic dinuclear complexes [(BMIK)Pt(α-pyridonate)2Pt(BMIK)](NO3)2 · 4H2O (1) (P1; a = 12.197(5) A, b = 12.505(5) A, c = 12.866(5) A, α = 88.17(3)°, β = 73.55(3)°, γ = 69.84(3)°; Z = 2) and [(BMIK)Pd(α-pyridonate)2Pd(BMIK)](NO3)2 · 4H2O (2) (a = 12.408(3) A, b = 12.660(3) A, c = 12.913(3) A, α = 89.55(3)°, β = 74.59(2)°, γ = 68.68(2)°) were prepared by reaction of [Pt(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2 or [Pd(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2 with α-pyridone in aqueous solutions at 40°C and were isolated as red air-stable crystals (BMIK = bis(N-methylimidazol-2-yl)ketone). For the synthesis of mixed crystals of 2 with the heterometal complex [(BMIK)Pd(α-pyridonate)2Pt(BMIK)](NO3)2 · 4H2O (3) (a = 12.430(4) A, b = 12.648(3) A, c = 12.907(4) A, α = 89.64(2)°, β = 74.57(2)°, γ = 68.65(2)°) α-pyridone was reacted with [Pd(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2 in a molar ratio of 2 : 1 followed by addition of [Pt(BMIK)(H2O)2](NO3)2. The dinuclear cations consist of two M(BMIK) moieties (M = Pt, Pd) bridged by the N- and O-atoms of α-pyridonate, forcing the heterocyclic ring into head-head-orientation. Within the dinuclear cation, the two metal atoms are between 2.840 A and 2.860 A apart. The intermolecular distances are between 4.762 A and 4.837 A. The coordination geometry of both metal atoms is square-planar with the metal atoms being diplaced slightly from their respective coordination planes toward each other. 1H and 195Pt NMR spectra are reported for the complexes.

The crystal structure of ZrI 4 was determined from Xray diffractometer data and was refined by full-matrix least-squares methods to an R index of 0-045 for 1985 observed reflexions. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P2/c with a = 8.356 (2), b = 8.326 (2), c = 17.926 (4) A, fl = 103.21 (3) ° , V = 1214. I A 3, D x = 4.914 Mg m -3, Z = 6 ZrI 4. The structure consists of infinite chains of ZrI 6 octahedra sharing non-opposite edges in such a way that a helical arrangement with an identity period of six octahedra along the chain results. It appears to be the first AB 4 structure of its type, different from the ct-NbI 4, ZrCI4, and fl-ReCl 4 chain structures. Z r I distances range from 2 . 6 9 2 ( 1 ) t o 3.030 (1) A, Z r Z r separations along the chains are 0567-7408/79/020274-05501.00 uniform [4.394 (1) and 4.416 (1) AI; I I distances within the c.c.p, anion arrangement are 3 .8994.199 (1) A within the chains and 4.103-4.413 (1) A between the chains.
