The halogen bond occurs when there is evidence of a net attractive interaction between an electrophilic region associated with a halogen atom in a molecular entity and a nucleophilic region in another, or the same, molecular entity. In this fairly extensive review, after a brief history of the interaction, we will provide the reader with a snapshot of where the research on the halogen bond is now, and, perhaps, where it is going. The specific advantages brought up by a design based on the use of the halogen bond will be demonstrated in quite different fields spanning from material sciences to biomolecular recognition and drug design.

The Halogen Bond

Rod MOFs are metal–organic frameworks in which the metal-containing secondary building units consist of infinite rods of linked metal-centered polyhedra. For such materials, we identify the points of extension, often atoms, which define the interface between the organic and inorganic components of the structure. The pattern of points of extension defines a shape such as a helix, ladder, helical ribbon, or cylinder tiling. The linkage of these shapes into a three-dimensional framework in turn defines a net characteristic of the original structure. Some scores of rod MOF structures are illustrated and deconstructed into their underlying nets in this way. Crystallographic data for all nets in their maximum symmetry embeddings are provided.

Structures of Metal–Organic Frameworks with Rod Secondary Building Units

Among the recent developments in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous layered coordination polymers (CPs) have garnered attention due to their modular nature and tunable structures. These factors enable a number of properties and applications, including gas and guest sorption, storage and separation of gases and small molecules, catalysis, luminescence, sensing, magnetism, and energy storage and conversion. Among MOFs, two-dimensional (2D) compounds are also known as 2D CPs or 2D MOFs. Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, 2D materials have also been widely studied. Several 2D MOFs are suitable for exfoliation as ultrathin nanosheets similar to graphene and other 2D materials, making these layered structures useful and unique for various technological applications. Furthermore, these layered structures have fascinating topological networks and entanglements. This review provides an overview of different aspects of 2D MOF layered architectures such as topology, interpenetration, structural transformations, properties, and applications.

Halogen bonding: A powerful, emerging tool for constructing high-dimensional metal-containing supramolecular networks

Location controlled symmetry reduction of the tetracarboxy porphyrin linker by altering the position of the coordinating groups leads to the design of a novel reduced symmetry linker 5,15-bis(p-carboxyphenyl)-10,20-bis(m-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (H4-TpmCPP). The corresponding crystalline coordination framework Gd-TpmCMPF was synthesized by employing the NaOH modulator approach. The resulting compound is an 8-connected network with a bcu topology and two different perforated 1D channels. The consequence of reduced symmetry is highlighted in the geometry of capsular void spaces formed between porphyrin moieties in the framework which allows coordination with formate ions in the reaction mixture.

Synthesis and Anticancer Activity of Aryl Quinolin-Benzimidazole-1,2,3-Triazole as Anticancer Agents

We have synthesized two new potassium metal coordination polymers {[K(CH 3 COCH 3 ) 3 ][Cu(btdt) 2 ]} n (1) and {[K(CH 3 CN) 2 ][Cu(btdt) 2 ]} n (2) of diverse dimensionality based on a copper coordination complex [Cu III (btdt) 2 ] 1- ({btdt} 2- = 2,1,3-benzenethiadiazole-5,6-dithiolate). Recrystallization of the dark brown solid, obtained from the reaction mixture of H 2 btdt, KOH and CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O in MeOH, from the coordinating solvents acetone and acetonitrile results in the formation of 3-D and 2-D extended networks in compounds (1) and (2) respectively. The crystal structures of (1) and (2) have been discussed in comparison with those of recently reported sodium coordination polymers {[Na(CH 3 OH) 4 ][Au(btdt) 2 ]} n (3), [Na(DMF) 2 ][Au(btdt) 2 ]} n (4) and {[Na(CH 3 CN) 2 ][Au(btdt) 2 ]} n (5). Compounds (1) and (2) have additionally been characterized by routine spectroscopy including elemental analyses.
