The need for grid-connected energy storage systems will grow worldwide in the next future due to the expansion of intermittent renewable energy sources and the inherent request for services of power quality and energy management. Electrochemical storage systems will be a solution of choice in many applications because of their localization flexibility, efficiency, scalability, and other appealing features. Among them redox flow batteries (RFBs) exhibit very high potential for several reasons, including power/energy independent sizing, high efficiency, room temperature operation, and extremely long charge/discharge cycle life. RFB technologies make use of different metal ion couples as reacting species. The best-researched and already commercially exploited types are all-vanadium redox batteries, but several research programs on other redox couples are underway in a number of countries. These programs aim at achieving major improvements resulting in more compact and cheaper systems, which can take the technology to a real breakthrough in stationary grid-connected applications.

It is an exciting time for power systems as there are many ground-breaking changes happening simultaneously. There is a global concensus in increasing the share of renewable energy-based generation in the overall mix, transitioning to a more environmental-friendly transportation with electric vehicles as well as liberalizing the electricity markets, much to the distaste of traditional utility companies. All of these changes are against the status quo and introduce new paradigms in the way the power systems operate. The generation penetrates distribution networks, renewables introduce intermittency, and liberalized markets need more competitive operation with the existing assets. All of these challenges require using some sort of storage device to develop viable power system operation solutions. There are different types of storage systems with different costs, operation characteristics, and potential applications. Understanding these is vital for the future design of power systems whether it be for short-term transient operation or long-term generation planning. In this paper, the state-of-the-art storage systems and their characteristics are thoroughly reviewed along with the cutting edge research prototypes. Based on their architectures, capacities, and operation characteristics, the potential application fields are identified. Finally, the research fields that are related to energy storage systems are studied with their impacts on the future of power systems.

This is important for design engineers and researchers in power quality to know the international standards used for power quality.

Power quality issues, problems, standards & their effects in industry with corrective means

Power quality problem causes a misoperation or failure of end user equipments. Distribution network, sensitive industrial loads and critical commercial operations suffer from outages and service interruptions which can cost financial losses to both utility and consumers. In India the use of electronic loads is increasing very fast and the gap between demand and the supply have made the reliability and power quality a critical issue. Further there is continuous thrust on optimal utilization of the non-conventional energy sources along with the central power station. In this paper a critical review have been presented chronologically various work to improve quality of power with the help of energy storage device i.e. Supercapacitors energy storage systems for ASD, elevators, UPS, and power distribution system, ride through capability, real power injection and reactive power injection for stabilization of the system.

Supercapacitors Energy Storage System for Power Quality Improvement: An Overview

Economic load dispatch is a non linear optimization problem which is of great importance in power systems. While analytical methods suffer from slow convergence and curse of dimensionality particle swarm optimization can be an efficient alternative to solve large scale non linear optimization problems. This paper presents an overview of basic PSO to provide a comprehensive survey on the problem of economic load dispatch as an optimization problem. The study is carried out for three unit test system and then for six unit generating system for without loss and with loss cases.
