Journal Article

Orthopaedic applications of bone graft & graft substitutes: a review.

TL;DR: This work reviews the currently available bone graft and graft substitutes for the novel therapeutic approaches in clinical setting of orthopaedic surgery and suggests two new approaches that may be suitable for use in the treatment of delayed union, malunion, and nonunion.
Journal ArticleDOI

Local antibiotic delivery systems for the treatment of osteomyelitis - A review

TL;DR: Both the systems release antibiotic at concentrations exceeding the minimum inhibitory concentrations for the most common pathogens involved in osteomyelitis without causing any adverse systemic effects although non biodegradable beads are to be removed from the surgical site after completion of antibiotic release.
Journal ArticleDOI

In vivo response of porous hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate prepared by aqueous solution combustion method and comparison with bioglass scaffolds.

TL;DR: Lower bone ingrowth and reduced strength was observed with HAp compared to beta-TCP/bioglass-based implants, which varied according to the composition of the implanting material, which could be tailored through this novel synthesis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Understanding osteomyelitis and its treatment through local drug delivery system.

TL;DR: A wide application of carrier systems, as a medium for local delivery of antibiotics, is being used experimentally and clinically for the treatment of osteomyelitis, and potentiality of biomaterial based carrier materials impregnated with antibiotics as local delivery approach is highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI

Strategies for delivering bone morphogenetic protein for bone healing.

TL;DR: Various aspects of success and limitation are collated and the prospects and challenges associated with the use of BMPs in orthopaedic surgery are identified.
