Acoustic studies of dysarthric speech: methods, progress, and potential.

A group of 317 healthy participants between 54 and 99 years of age performed a verbal fluency task. The participants included Chinese, Hispanic, and Vietnamese immigrants, as well as White and African American English speakers. They were given 1 min to name as many animals as possible in their native language. The results showed that more animal names were produced by younger people and those with more education. Language background was also an important factor: The Vietnamese produced the most animal names and the Spanish speakers produced the fewest. The exaggerated difference between these two groups is attributed to the fact that Vietnamese animal names are short (predominantly 1 syllable) while the Spanish animal names are longer than any other language in this study (2 and 3 syllables per word). Finally, although the ethnic groups named different animals, and appeared to vary in the variety of animal names they used, these factors did not affect overall verbal fluency performance.

The effects of age, education, and ethnicity on verbal fluency.

Twelve patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease had acoustic speech analysis of sentence utterances to provide information on speech tempo and accuracy of articulation. As a measure of rate of speech the duration of opening-closing movements during articulation was determined from speech wave variables. The intensity of sound emission during articulatory closure as required for stop consonant production, for example, magnitude of p, magnitude of t, magnitude of k, was used as an index of the degree of closure. Speech tempo was not significantly different from normal. The patients, however, had a reduced capacity of completing articulatory occlusion. This was interpreted as reflecting a reduction in movement amplitude of the articulators. Articulatory "undershoot" was not uniform but influenced by linguistic demands in that the closures associated with a stressed syllable were performed at the expense of unstressed ones. Furthermore, switching between opening and closing movements of the articulators in sentence production seemed undisturbed. These results indicate that motor planning of speech differs from arm movement control.

Bilingual performance on the boston naming test: preliminary norms in Spanish and English.

Identification of dysarthria types based on perceptual analysis.

The 60-item Boston Naming Test (BNT; Kaplan, Goodglass, & Weintraub, 1983) was administered to 323 normal elderly subjects between the ages of 65 and 97. The combined effects of age, education, and living environment (institutionalized/independent living) on total test score was determined. These three variables accounted for 32% of the variance in BNT performance. Educational background accounted for the greatest proportion of the variance, followed by age and living environment. There was also a significant interaction between age, education, and living environment. Overall, increased age adversely affected BNT scores. However, institutionalized subjects with a sixth-ninth grade education performed poorly on the BNT regardless of age. In addition, there was little difference in BNT performance according to age or living environment for the well educated. (The only exceptions were the oldest institutionalized subjects, who performed poorly on the BNT regardless of level of education.) The data presented in this study should be helpful for those clinicians who administer the BNT to elderly patients who are institutionalized or who have a limited educational background.
