The volatile constituents of the essential oils of 23 taxa belonging to the Apioideae subfamily were studied in detail. The investigated taxa were Pimpinella serbica (Vis.) Bentham & Hooker, Libanotis montana Cr., Cnidium silaifolium (Jacq.) Simk. ssp. orientale (Boiss.) Tutin, Bupleurum praealtum L., B. sibthorpianum S. S. var. diversifolium (Roch.) Hay, Aegopodium podagraria L., Torilis anthriscus (L.) Gmel., Orlaya grandiflora (L.) Hoffm., Laserpitium siler L., Laser trilobum (L.) Brokh., Chaerophyllum aureum L., C. hirsutum L., C. temulum L., Pastinaca sativa L., P. hirsuta Pancic., Tordylium maximum L., Physospermum cornubiense (L.) DC., Peucedanum alsaticum L., P. oreoselinum (L.) Moench, P. cervaria (L.) Cuss., P. austriacum (Jacq.) Koch, P. longifolium W. et K., and P. officinale L. All of these species grow wild in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. The essential oils were found to be complex mixtures of various compounds, more than 100 constituents being in each taxon, with contributions of main products never exceeding 25% of the total content. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were found to be the main group of constituents of all taxa, except for Peucedanum species, where monoterpene hydrocarbons were identified as the main components. The chemotaxonomic value of the essential-oil composition is discussed according to results of principal-component analysis (PCA). The essential-oil composition mainly reflects current taxonomic relationships between the investigated taxa.

The average atmospheric concentration of CO{sub 2} will probably double before the end of next century. Many of the consequences for plant growth can and should be determined now. In this review the effects of [CO{sub 2}] on a variety of plant processes are summarized: stomatal opening and closing; stomatal density; respiration; root morphogenesis; and flowering. The effects of growth under elevated [CO{sub 2}] on crop yield and seed composition are also discussed. Adverse effects on the composition of C{sub 3} cereal grains are clearly indicated. 91 refs., 2 tabs.

Plant responses to carbon dioxide

Warm-humid areas around the globe constitute the cradle of humanity, providing their inhabitants the most favorable environments for living and agricultural production. In this “Garden of Eden”, which spreads within the globe’s temperate and tropical zones, is also thriving an annoying but dangerous daemon, the mosquito. This little devil constitutes the main vector of malaria and human encephalitis, both infectious diseases that account as major threats of public health (Becker et al., 2003). Recently, these threats have been spread to a broader geographical area, as a consequence of their vectors (Aedes sp., Anopheles sp. and Culex sp.) introduction into metropolitan areas of northern hemisphere, such as Chicago (Tedesco et al., 2010), New York (Peterson et al., 2006) and Paris (Delaunay et al., 2009). Since mosquito breeding habitats in both urban and rural areas are man-made (Imbahale et al., 2010), there are several restrictions limiting the efforts towards the development of an integrated vector management system. Todate, the history of evolutions of malaria vector interventions is directly connected with the mosquito control tools development, concerning either environmental modifications/manipulations or their chemical and/or biological control (Kilama, 2009).

Essential Oils of Umbelliferae (Apiaceae) Family Taxa as Emerging Potent Agents for Mosquito Control

The water-distilled essential oils from aerial parts of Chaerophyllum macropodum Boiss. and Chaerophyllum crinitum Boiss. were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The oil of C. macropodum was found to contain α-pinene (23.0%), β-pinene (17.3%) and fenchyl acetate (13.8%) as the major constituents. The oil of C. crinitum was characterized by a higher amount of (E)-β-ocimene (50.5%). Both oils were richer in monoterpene than sesquiterpene hydrocarbons.

Essential oils of ripe fruits and umbels of Chaerophyllum coloraturn L. (Apiaceae) were found by GC and GC/MS to contain very high percentage of (E)-Pfarnesene (79.21% and 68.40% respectively).

Adaptive characteristics of the endemic species Satureja horvatii Silic (Lamiaceae) in mountain-mediterranean and mediterranean habitats


 This paper presents the resources and tools used to extract and evaluate bilingual, English-Serbian terminology in
 the power engineering domain. The resources consist of existing general and domain lexica, and a domain parallel corpus; tools
 include term extractors for both languages and a tool for aligning the segments belonging to corpus sentences. The system was
 tested by varying a match function that establishes the presence of an extracted term in an aligned segment (a chunk), ranging
 from very loose to strict. The evaluation of results showed that the precision of English term extraction was 92%, Serbian term
 extraction 86%, while the precision of bilingual pair extraction was 72% based on the strictest match function. The result of
 extraction was 2,684 correct bilingual pairs that enhanced the terminology database and can further be used to support the search
 of the power engineering aligned collection stored in a digital library.

Corpus-based bilingual terminology extraction in the power engineering domain

In this paper we present the Serbian part of the ELTeC multilingual corpus of novels written in the time period 1840-1920. The corpus is being built in order to test various distant reading methods and tools with the aim of re-thinking the European literary history. We present the various steps that led to the production of the Serbian sub-collection: the novel selection and retrieval, text preparation, structural annotation, POS-tagging, lemmatization and named entity recognition. The Serbian sub-collection was published on different platforms in order to make it freely available to various users. Several use examples show that this sub-collection is usefull for both close and distant reading approaches.
