Abstract: Samples of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla from two different habitats in the River Neretva estuary region were analysed using two different traditional fishery gear, in the period from 2016 to 2019. The monthly eel catches in ten traditional fyke nets in Parila lagoon varied from 4.4 to 12.7 kg (±2.45 kg) in 2016 and 2.4 to 9.6 kg (±2.01 kg) in 2019. There were no statistical differences between monthly and total weights recorded in 2016 and 2019 (t=1.04; p=0.312). The b-coefficient of the length-weight (LW) relationship for the freshwater eel samples varied from 3,1036 to 3,3206 duringtwo-year period of the sampling. The LW relationship for the brackish population was significantly lower (b-coefficient 2,6513). The dominant eel stage in both sites was yellow eel, while silver stage was scarce. The fishery with traditional devices revealed that efficiency of these artisanal tools is low, pointing to poor abundance of eel in their common habitats. The recorded catch using bigger traditional eel trap gear during autumn spawning migrations was also dominated with yellow stage, while silver eel represented only 15,4% of the catch. The infestation of eels with the parasite,Anguillicoloides crassus was significantly higher in freshwater habitat (41% of eel specimens infested) than in brackish, Parila lagoon (7%). Poor efficiency of traditional gear, bad length and weight structure of the population and low b-coefficients of eels in their most important habitat, indicate poor status of European eel population and River Neretva estuarine ecosystems.

Abstract: Abstract Differences in crystallinity, structure and composition variation along the growing direction in gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata otoliths that inhabited different environments were determined to evaluate the correlation of spectroscopic and chemical data with the lifetime development and movement pattern. The Raman spectroscopy signal provided the characteristic bands whose Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) were used to track the signal variability. The FWHM showed an initial increase in the core area, followed by a decrease depicting two minima coinciding growth rings. The crystal discontinuity linked to annual rings was confirmed. The FWHM pattern followed cycle in the individual’s activity. However, no significant correlation with FWHM and environmental factors although the slope of the FWHM variation distinguished aquaculture and costal groups from open sea and transitional, estuarine waters. Raman data were further correlated with morphological and elemental composition obtained via SEM–EDX and by LA-ICP-MS. SEM clearly confirmed CRM findings. Finally, multiparameter analysis of Ba/Ca concentrations obtained by LA-ICP-MS indicated the separation of groups associated with aquaculture and transitional waters due lowest variability in the elemental composition. Other groups are more variable possibly due to the water oligotrophic character and greater variability in prey availability in each environment. Results of the present study showed the additional potential of Raman spectroscopy as a complementary tool for inference of migration or origin of fish based on otolith composition and structure like other well-established technique.

Abstract: There are gaps in our knowledge of important fish consumed by people in tropical countries. Small-scale fisheries are difficult to regulate, especially in countries with no species monitoring. At Copacabana (Rio de Janeiro), we observed 490 individuals of badejo (Comb grouper) (Mycteropeca acutirostris in 2013-2014 and in 2018-2020. The average catch was 1.36 kg (n=466 individuals). A pattern of decreasing catches was observed for Comb grouper. Therefore, provided that the fishing gear and the number of fish have remained the same, the apparent decrease in Comb grouper needs to be further investigated. The results provide information about the major spawning season, around spring (September-December) with additional spawning during April. Genetic analyses in samples from 96 grouper obtained along the coast of Brazil were conducted. The Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) loci obtained for grouper species enabled us to determine the relative genetic proximity of M. acutirostris and Mycteroperca bonaci, information that can be useful for aquaculture and conservation. The objectives of this study were: a) to obtain data about the fishing activity (catch landings) of Comb groupers at Copacabana, Posto 6; b) to verify the reproductive period of Comb grouper, throughout the year, through the catches from the fishery; c) to develop a large numbers of SNP markers, which can be useful to studies about grouper populations (Mycteroperca and Epinephelus); and, d) to obtain data on the price of the Comb grouper. This study contributes data on the fishery and on the biology and ecology of groupers, and further contributes to conservation efforts. Keywords: comb grouper, fisheries, genetics, Mycteroperca.
