Organic solar cell research has developed during the past 30 years, but especially in the last decade it has attracted scientific and economic interest triggered by a rapid increase in power conversion efficiencies. This was achieved by the introduction of new materials, improved materials engineering, and more sophisticated device structures. Today, solar power conversion efficiencies in excess of 3% have been accomplished with several device concepts. Though efficiencies of these thin-film organicdevices have not yet reached those of their inorganic counterparts (η ≈ 10–20%); the perspective of cheap production (employing, e.g., roll-to-roll processes) drives the development of organic photovoltaic devices further in a dynamic way. The two competitive production techniques used today are either wet solution processing or dry thermal evaporation of the organic constituents. The field of organic solar cells profited well from the development of light-emitting diodes based on similar technologies, which have entered the market recently. We review here the current status of the field of organic solar cells and discuss different production technologies as well as study the important parameters to improve their performance.

Organic solar cells: An overview

In heterostructures of the transition metal dichalcogenides MoS2 and WSe2, atomically thin p–n junctions are created that show gate-tunable rectifying and photovoltaic behaviour mediated by tunnelling-assisted interlayer recombination. Semiconductor p–n junctions are essential building blocks for electronic and optoelectronic devices1,2. In conventional p–n junctions, regions depleted of free charge carriers form on either side of the junction, generating built-in potentials associated with uncompensated dopant atoms. Carrier transport across the junction occurs by diffusion and drift processes influenced by the spatial extent of this depletion region. With the advent of atomically thin van der Waals materials and their heterostructures, it is now possible to realize a p–n junction at the ultimate thickness limit3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. Van der Waals junctions composed of p- and n-type semiconductors—each just one unit cell thick—are predicted to exhibit completely different charge transport characteristics than bulk heterojunctions10,11,12. Here, we report the characterization of the electronic and optoelectronic properties of atomically thin p–n heterojunctions fabricated using van der Waals assembly of transition-metal dichalcogenides. We observe gate-tunable diode-like current rectification and a photovoltaic response across the p–n interface. We find that the tunnelling-assisted interlayer recombination of the majority carriers is responsible for the tunability of the electronic and optoelectronic processes. Sandwiching an atomic p–n junction between graphene layers enhances the collection of the photoexcited carriers. The atomically scaled van der Waals p–n heterostructures presented here constitute the ultimate functional unit for nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Atomically thin p–n junctions with van der Waals heterointerfaces

We introduce an ultrathin donor-acceptor solar cell composed entirely of inorganic nanocrystals spin-cast from solution. These devices are stable in air, and post-fabrication processing allows for power conversion efficiencies approaching 3% in initial tests. This demonstration elucidates a class of photovoltaic devices with potential for stable, low-cost power generation.

Air-Stable All-Inorganic Nanocrystal Solar Cells Processed from Solution

We have developed a numerical device model that consistently describes the current-voltage characteristics of polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells. Bimolecular recombination and a temperature- and field-dependent generation mechanism of free charges are incorporated. It is demonstrated that in poly[2-methoxy-5-(3('),7(')-dimethyloctyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene]- (OC1C10-PPV-) and [6,6]-phenyl C-61-butyric acid methyl ester- (PCBM-) (1:4 wt. %) based solar cells space-charge effects only play a minor role, leading to a relatively constant electric field in the device. Furthermore, at short-circuit conditions only 7% of all free carriers are lost due to bimolecular recombination. The model predicts that an increased hole mobility together with a reduction of the acceptor strength of 0.5 eV will lead to a maximum attainable efficiency of 5.5% in the PPV/PCBM-based solar cells.

Molecular Semiconductors in Organic Photovoltaic Cells

Charge carriers are photogenerated with very different spatial distributions in conventional inorganic photovoltaic (IPV) cells and in organic photovoltaic (OPV or excitonic) cells. This leads to a fundamental, and often overlooked, mechanistic difference between them. Carriers are generated primarily at the exciton-dissociating heterointerface in OPV cells, resulting in the production of electrons in one phase and holes in the other—the two carrier types are thus already separated across the interface upon photogeneration in OPV cells, giving rise to a powerful chemical potential energy gradient ∇μhv that promotes the photovoltaic effect. This occurs also in high-surface-area OPV cells, although their description is more complex. In contrast, both carrier types are photogenerated together throughout the bulk in IPV cells: ∇μhv then drives both electrons and holes in the same direction through the same phase; efficient carrier separation therefore requires a built-in equilibrium electrical potential energ...
