Fuzzy Set Theory - and Its Applications

This paper describes an experiment on the “linguistic” synthesis of a controller for a model industrial plant (a steam engine). Fuzzy logic is used to convert heuristic control rules stated by a human operator into an automatic control strategy. The experiment was initiated to investigate the possibility of human interaction with a learning controller. However, the control strategy set up linguistically proved to be far better than expected in its own right, and the basic experiment of linguistic control synthesis in a non-learning controller is reported here.

The concept of an "intelligent manufacturing system" (IMS) is a very broad one that has come to playa major role in manufacturing research in recent years. It is a concept that defies precise definition because one major research objective is to couple almost human levels of intelligence with advanced manufacturing technology in order to develop new generations of manufacturing systems that are agile in their capabilities, as are people. However, science does not yet provide us with deep and widely accepted models of how people achieve such agility, and researchers in IMS must therefore adopt engineering pragmatism and target their research on improvement and innovation in manufacturing processes that address the weaknesses of existing systems that are not agile, not intelligent, not adaptive, and so on. Intelligence is a term more readily defined in terms of its absence than in the particular characteristics that define its presence. Problems of definition have not impeded research, however, and the international manufacturing research community is collaborating highly effectively in a wide-ranging series of projects under the aegis of intelligent manufacturing. This special issue presents the background to these projects, the structure of the international IMS research program, and a range of examples of advanced research on, and practical applications of, intelligent manufacturing systems. Overview of the special issue on intelligent manufacturing systems

Futo, Gergely and Szeredi have put forward a very interesting approach to the first problem situation of this conference, that of remote space vehicle control. The methodology they propose is based on a computer-based problem-solving system, Prolog, that tests assertions against a database and it is noteworthy that it is also applicable to the other two problem situations. The authors presumably chose the first situation as their example because it involves a classical dynamical system which, at first sight, is an unlikely candidate for logic simulation, but where their extensions through temporal primitives in T-Prolog (Futo & Szeredi 1981) are shown to full advantage.

Widespread access to the Internet has led to the formation of geographically dispersed scientific communities collaborating through the network. The tools supporting such collaboration currently are based primarily on electronic mail through mailing list servers, and access to archives of research reports through ftp, gopher and world wide web. However, electronic communication can support the knowledge processes of scientific communities more directly through overtly represented knowledge structures. This paper describes some experiments in the use of knowledge acquisition (ISA) and representation (KR) tools to define and analyze major policy and technical issues in an international research community responsible for one of the test cases in the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) research program. It is concluded that distributed knowledge support systems in routine use by world-class scientific communities collaborating through the Internet will provide a major impetus to artificial intelligence research.
