Conjugated poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) chains are known to exist at least in two distinct conformations: a coiled phase and a better ordered aggregated phase. Employing steady state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, we measure the course of aggregation of P3HT in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution within a temperature range of 300 K to 170 K. We show that aggregation is a temperature controlled process, driven by a thermodynamic order–disorder transition. The transition temperature increases with the molecular weight of the chains and can be rationalized in the theory of Sanchez. This implies a smearing out of the phase transition in samples with increasing polydispersity and erodes the signature of a first order phase transition. The detection of a hysteresis when undergoing cooling/heating cycles further substantiates this reasoning.

The Impact of Polydispersity and Molecular Weight on the Order–Disorder Transition in Poly(3-hexylthiophene)

An efficient synthetic protocol to functionalize the cyanoacrylic acid anchoring group of commercially available MK-2 dye with a highly water-stable hydroxamate anchoring group is described. Extensive characterization of this hydroxamate-modified dye (MK-2HA) reveals that the modification does not affect its favorable optoelectronic properties. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) prepared with the MK-2HA dye attain improved efficiency (6.9%), relative to analogously prepared devices with commercial MK-2 and N719 dyes. The hydroxamate anchoring group also contributes to significantly increased water stability, with a decrease in the rate constant for dye desorption of MK-2HA relative to MK-2 in the presence of water by as much as 37.5%. In addition, the hydroxamate-anchored dye undergoes essentially no loss in DSSC efficiency and the external quantum efficiency improves when up to 20% water is purposefully added to the electrolyte. In contrast, devices prepared with the commercial dye suffer a 50% decline in efficiency under identical conditions, with a concomitant decrease in external quantum efficiency. Collectively, our results indicate that covalent functionalization of organic dyes with hydroxamate anchoring groups is a simple and efficient approach to improving the water stability of the dye–semiconductor interface and overall device durability.

Substitution of a hydroxamic acid anchor into the MK-2 dye for enhanced photovoltaic performance and water stability in a DSSC

Conjugated polymers in the solid state usually exhibit low fluorescence quantum yields, which limit their applications in many areas such as light-emitting diodes. Despite considerable research efforts, the underlying mechanism still remains controversial and elusive. Here, the nature and properties of excited states in the archetypal polythiophene are investigated via aggregates suspended in solvents with different dielectric constants (ɛ). In relatively polar solvents (ɛ>∼ 3), the aggregates exhibit a low fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 2-5%, similar to bulk films, however, in relatively nonpolar solvents (ɛ<∼ 3) they demonstrate much higher fluorescence QY up to 20-30%. A series of mixed quantum-classical atomistic simulations illustrate that dielectric induced stabilization of nonradiative charge-transfer (CT) type states can lead to similar drastic reduction in fluorescence QY as seen experimentally. Fluorescence lifetime measurement reveals that the CT-type states exist as a competitive channel of the formation of emissive exciton-type states.

An insight into non-emissive excited states in conjugated polymers

Broadband pump–probe spectroscopy is used to examine the ultrafast photophysics of the π-conjugated polymers poly(3-hexylselenophene) (P3HS) and poly(3-hexyltellurophene) (P3HTe) in solution. An excited-state absorption feature that we attribute to a transition in the triplet manifold appears on the picosecond time scale. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations support this assignment. The formation of triplets is consistent with significant fluorescence quenching observed in solutions of the neat polymers. Triplet formation occurs in ∼26 and ∼1.8 ps (upper limit) for P3HS and P3HTe, respectively. The successive decrease in fluorescence quantum efficiency and triplet formation time are consistent with intersystem crossing facilitated by the heavier selenium and tellurium atoms. These results strongly suggest that primary photoexcitations are rapidly converted into triplet states in P3HS and P3HTe.

The photoexcited electron transfer rate represents one of the most important properties required for photovoltaic devices. However, the fabrication of solar cells with a faster electron transfer remains a technological challenge. Regulating the energy level alignment of acceptor-donor system by the incorporation of foreign ions is one of the most promising strategies to achieve this aim. Herein we demonstrate that the incorporation of silver ions into TiO2 nanocrystals results in a remarkable reduction of energy offset between the conduction band edge of acceptor and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of donor. In particular, the electron transfer life time was shortened from 30.2 to 18.3 ps, i.e., almost 40% faster than pure TiO2 acceptor, thus leading to a notable enhancement of power conversion efficiency by almost 38% in organic/inorganic hybrid solar cells. The reduction of the ‘excess’ energy offset accelerates the electron transfer, which is expected to have an important role in applications of solar energy conversion and photon detectors.

Reducing the excess energy offset in organic/inorganic hybrid solar cells: Toward faster electron transfer

The fluorescence decays of a stereoregular head-to-tail RR-HT poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT, in methylcyclohexane (MCH) are described by sums of three or four exponential terms, respectively above and below −10 °C. In the high-temperature region, the polymer lifetime (ca. 500 ps) is accompanied by two shorter decay times (ca. 20 and 120 ps), which are assigned to intrachain energy transfer from high to lower energy excitons on the basis of temperature and wavelength dependence of the fluorescence decays. The absence of conformational (torsional) relaxation is attributed to the small dihedral angle between monomers that is predicted for the stereoregular polymer in the ground state. Below −10 °C, the polymer forms excimer-like aggregates, showing vibrational structured absorption and emission bands similar to those observed in thin films.
