The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is a numerical algorithm for the efficient truncation of the Hilbert space of low-dimensional strongly correlated quantum systems based on a rather general decimation prescription. This algorithm has achieved unprecedented precision in the description of one-dimensional quantum systems. It has therefore quickly become the method of choice for numerical studies of such systems. Its applications to the calculation of static, dynamic, and thermodynamic quantities in these systems are reviewed here. The potential of DMRG applications in the fields of two-dimensional quantum systems, quantum chemistry, three-dimensional small grains, nuclear physics, equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical physics, and time-dependent phenomena is also discussed. This review additionally considers the theoretical foundations of the method, examining its relationship to matrix-product states and the quantum information content of the density matrices generated by the DMRG.

The structural properties of free nanoclusters are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the interplay of energetic, thermodynamic, and kinetic factors in the explanation of cluster structures that are actually observed in experiments. The review starts with a brief summary of the experimental methods for the production of free nanoclusters and then considers theoretical and simulation issues, always discussed in close connection with the experimental results. The energetic properties are treated first, along with methods for modeling elementary constituent interactions and for global optimization on the cluster potential-energy surface. After that, a section on cluster thermodynamics follows. The discussion includes the analysis of solid-solid structural transitions and of melting, with its size dependence. The last section is devoted to the growth kinetics of free nanoclusters and treats the growth of isolated clusters and their coalescence. Several specific systems are analyzed.

The ground-state properties of a superconductor containing intermediate-valence impurities are analyzed. The impurities are described by a degenerate Anderson model in the infinite correlation limit. We consider two accessible configurations, one nonmagnetic and one magnetic with a degeneracy factor ${N}_{f}$. The 1/${N}_{f}$ expansion is formulated. With the assumption that no correlations exist between impurities, the gap parameters and critical fields at zero temperature are calculated. A brief discussion of the excitation spectrum and the existence of bound states near the gap edge is included.

Mixed-valence impurities in a superconducting matrix: 1/ N f expansion

We analyze the electronic properties of adatom-doped graphene in the low-impurity-concentration regime. We focus on the Anderson localized regime and calculate the localization length $\ensuremath{\xi}$ as a function of the electron doping and an external magnetic field. The impurity states hybridize with carbon's ${p}_{z}$ states and form a partially filled band close to the Dirac point. Near the impurity band center, the chiral symmetry of the system's effective Hamiltonian is partially preserved, which leads to a large enhancement of $\ensuremath{\xi}$. The sensitivity of transport properties, namely, Mott's variable range hopping scale ${T}_{0}$, to an external magnetic field perpendicular to the graphene sheet leads to a colossal magnetoresistance effect, as observed in recent experiments.

We study the negative-{ital U} Hubbard model by exact diagonalization of a 4{times}4 cluster with different numbers of particles. We calculate the ground-state energy and wave function as well as the one-particle, charge- and spin-excitation spectra. We show that the BCS approximation gives results in good agreement with the exact ones for the ground-state energy and wave function in the whole range of {ital U}. In the one-particle excitation spectrum the BCS dispersion relation gives the position of the most intense peaks of the exact calculation. Lower-energy (quasiparticle) excitations, which are interpreted as strongly dressed Bogoliubov quasiparticles, also appear. The occurrence of pair-breaking and collective excitations in the charge- and spin-excitation spectra and the interplay between one-particle and collective modes are discussed.
