Disclosed herein is an antenna apparatus for use in harvesting ambient radio frequency, RF, energy. The apparatus comprises one or more RF antenna components arranged to receive RF energy for producing electricity. The one or more RF antenna components comprise a plurality of frequency filtering components, each frequency filtering component being arranged to filter a respective frequency band of the received RF energy. Also disclosed herein is an apparatus comprising a rectifying circuit arranged to convert a variable electrical signal received at an input from an associated antenna into a direct current electrical signal for supplying to an electrical energy storage unit, the antenna for use in harvesting ambient radio frequency, RF, energy. The apparatus also comprises a power management module having an input arranged to receive the direct current and control supply of the direct current to the electrical energy storage unit. The rectifying circuit comprises a plurality of transmission lines, wherein the input of the rectifying circuit and the input of the power management module are connected via the plurality of transmission lines. The power management module is arranged at least partially within a boundary defined by the plurality of transmission lines.

Rf energy harvester

This paper presents the design equations for lower band-edge frequency for all the regular shapes of printed monopole antennas with various feed positions. The length of the feed transmission line is a critical design parameter of these monopole antennas. Design curves for the length of the feed transmission line for various lower band-edge frequencies for all these regular shaped monopoles have been generated. A systematic study has been presented to explain the ultra-wide bandwidth obtained from these antennas with an example of elliptical monopole antenna.

Design Aspects of Printed Monopole Antennas for Ultra-Wide Band Applications

This letter presents novel circular and elliptical coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed slot and mictrostip-fed antenna designs targeting the 3.1?10.6 GHz band. The antennas are comprised of elliptical or circular stubs that excite similar-shaped slot apertures. Four prototypes have been examined, fabricated and experimentally tested, the three being fed by a CPW and the fourth by a microstrip line, exhibiting a very satisfactory behavior throughout the 7.5 GHz of the allocated bandwidth in terms of impedance matching $(hbox VSWR?2)$, radiation efficiency and radiation pattern characteristics. Measured impedance bandwidths of beyond 175% will be presented.

Circular and Elliptical CPW-Fed Slot and Microstrip-Fed Antennas for Ultrawideband Applications

A novel planar ultrawideband (UWB) antenna with band-notched function. The antenna consists of a radiation patch that has an arc-shaped edge and a partially modified ground plane. The antenna that makes it different from the traditional monopole antenna is the modification in the shape of ground plane, including two bevel slots on the upper edge and two semicircle slots on the bottom edge of the ground plane. These slots improve the input impedance bandwidth and the high frequency radiation performance. With this design, the return loss is lower than 10 dB in 3.1-10.6 GHz frequency range and the radiation pattern is highly similar to the monopole antenna. By embedding a pair of T-shaped stubs inside an elliptical slot cut in the radiation patch, a notch around 5.5 GHz WLAN band is obtained. The average gain is lower than -18 dBi in the stopband, while the patterns and the gains at frequencies other than in the stopband are similar to that of the antenna without the band-notched function.

Design of a Planar Ultrawideband Antenna With a New Band-Notch Structure

A compact planar ultrawideband (UWB) antenna with band notched characteristics is presented. Modification in the shape of radiation element and ground plane with two symmetrical bevel slots on the lower edge of the radiation element and on the upper edge of the ground plane makes the antenna different from the rectangular printed monopole. These slots improve the input impedance bandwidth and the high frequency radiation characteristics. With this design, the reflection coefficient is lower than 10 dB in the 3.1-10.6 GHz frequency range and radiation pattern is similar to dipole antenna. With the inclusion of an additional small radiation patch, a frequency-notched antenna is also designed and good out of band performance from 5.0-6.0 GHz can be achieved. Measured results confirm that the antenna is suitable for UWB applications due to its compact size and high performance. Also an approximate empirical expression to calculate the lowest resonant frequency is proposed.

A Simple Ultrawideband Planar Rectangular Printed Antenna With Band Dispensation

This paper presents a study of a novel monopole antenna for ultrawide-band (UWB) applications. Printed on a dielectric substrate and fed by a 50 /spl Omega/ microstrip line, a planar circular disc monopole has been demonstrated to provide an ultra wide 10 dB return loss bandwidth with satisfactory radiation properties. The parameters which affect the performance of the antenna in terms of its frequency domain characteristics are investigated. A good agreement is achieved between the simulation and the experiment. In addition, the time domain performance of the proposed antenna is also evaluated in simulations.

Study of a printed circular disc monopole antenna for UWB systems

This paper proposes and studies a novel design of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed circular disc monopole antenna for ultra wideband (UWB) applications. A circular disc monopole printed on a dielectric substrate and fed by a 50 /spl Omega/ CPW on the same layer is demonstrated numerically and experimentally to yield an ultra wide -10 dB bandwidth with omnidirectional radiation patterns over the entire bandwidth. The effect of the disc dimension on the antenna performance is also investigated.
