Additive manufacturing (AM) alias 3D printing translates computer-aided design (CAD) virtual 3D models into physical objects. By digital slicing of CAD, 3D scan, or tomography data, AM builds objects layer by layer without the need for molds or machining. AM enables decentralized fabrication of customized objects on demand by exploiting digital information storage and retrieval via the Internet. The ongoing transition from rapid prototyping to rapid manufacturing prompts new challenges for mechanical engineers and materials scientists alike. Because polymers are by far the most utilized class of materials for AM, this Review focuses on polymer processing and the development of polymers and advanced polymer systems specifically for AM. A review on stereolithography and its applications in biomedical engineering

This paper offers a review of present achievements in the field of processing of ceramic-based materials with complex geometry using the main additive manufacturing (AM) technologies In AM, the geometrical design of a desired ceramic-based component is combined with the materials design In this way, the fabrication times and the product costs of ceramic-based parts with required properties can be substantially reduced However, dimensional accuracy and surface finish still remain crucial features in today's AM due to the layer-by-layer formation of the parts In spite of the fact that significant progress has been made in the development of feedstock materials, the most difficult limitations for AM technologies are the restrictions set by material selection for each AM method and aspects considering the inner architectural design of the manufactured parts Hence, any future progress in the field of AM should be based on the improvement of the existing technologies or, alternatively, the development of new approaches with an emphasis on parts allowing the near-net formation of ceramic structures, while optimizing the design of new materials and of the part architecture

Additive manufacturing of biomaterials.

Ceramic stereolithography and related additive manufacturing methods involving photopolymerization of ceramic powder suspensions are reviewed in terms of the capabilities of current devices. The practical fundamentals of the cure depth, cure width, and cure profile are related to the optical properties of the monomer, ceramic, and photo-active components. Postpolymerization steps, including harvesting and cleaning the objects, binder burnout, and sintering, are discussed and compared with conventional methods. The prospects for practical manufacturing are discussed.

Ceramic Stereolithography: Additive Manufacturing for Ceramics by Photopolymerization

Ceramic laser stereolithography is a manufacturing process suitable candidate for the production of complex shape technical ceramics. The green ceramic is produced layer by layer through laser polymerisation of UV curable ceramic suspensions. A number of critical issues deserve attention: high solid loading and low viscosity of the suspensions, high UV reactivity, prevention of interlayer delamination in the green and in the sintered body, good mechanical performance. In this work, ZrO2 reinforced Al2O3 components have been obtained from an acrylic modified zircon loaded with alumina powders. The zircon compound is effective as organic photoactivated resin and allows the dispersion of a high volume fraction of Al2O3 powder (up to 50 vol.%) while keeping viscosity at reasonable low values. The zircon compound also represents a liquid ceramic precursor that converts to oxide after burning out of the binder. Thanks to the good dispersion of the alumina powder in the zircon acrylate, a uniform dispersion of ZrO2 submicron particles is obtained after pyrolysis. These are located at the grain boundaries between alumina grains. Formation of both monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2 occurs as evidenced by XRD. No delamination occurs in bending tests as evidenced by SEM fractography, satisfactory modulus and strength values were concurrently found.

Synthesis and characterization of clay-nanocomposite solvent-based polyurethane adhesives

Curing reactions of photoactivated epoxy resins are assuming an increasing relevance in many industrial applications, such as coatings, printing, and adhesives. Besides these processes, stereolithography (SL) makes use of photoactivated resins in a laser-induced polymerization for 3D building. The kinetic behavior of photocuring is a key point for full comprehension of the cure conditions occurring in the small zone irradiated by the laser beam during the building process. Furthermore, the kinetic analysis is very important to determine the cure time needed for part building in a stereolithographic equipment. The mechanisms involved in a cationic photopolymerization are complex compared with radical photopolymerization. In this paper the photoinitiated polymerization of a commercially available epoxy-based resin for stereolithography (SL5170) was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Substantial information about the SL5170 chemical composition and curing mechanism was determined through FTIR analysis. The polymerization rate and the maximum degree of reaction were determined directly from experimental DSC curves. Kinetic characterization of epoxy photopolymerization was carried out as a function of the temperature and irradiation intensity and experimental results were compared with an original mathematical model. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
