Journal ArticleDOI

Atheroma and arterial wall shear. Observation, correlation and proposal of a shear dependent mass transfer mechanism for atherogenesis.

TL;DR: It appears that wall shear rate may be a major controlling factor in the development of atheromatous lesions in man and in animals and a net flux of cholesterol from blood to wall cannot account for the observed normally occurring (quasi-steady state) and experimentally induced atheroma.
Book

The Mechanics of the Circulation

TL;DR: The author explains the background mechanics of blood vessel walls, solid mechanics and the properties of blood vessels, and an introduction to mass transfer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Arterial Wall Shear and Distribution of Early Atheroma in Man

TL;DR: The sparing of fatty streaking in localized areas is reported, at which they suggest low wall shear rate (the product of velocity gradient and fluid viscosity) is experienced and shown that acute elevation of shear rates on the aortic wall causes endothelial damage and increased permeability to lipids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Some effects of restriction of chest cage expansion on pulmonary function in man: an experimental study

TL;DR: The entire pressure-volume curve of the lung was altered, but was restored to normal when a deep inspiration was taken after release of the restricting apparatus, and the escape of gas from poorly ventilated regions of the Lung was detected.
