This report describes all social surveys of residents' reactions to environmental noise in residential areas that have been located in English language publications from 1943 to December of 2000. A total of 521 surveys are described. The surveys are indexed by country, noise source, and date of survey. The publications and reports from each survey are listed in a bibliography.

An Updated Catalog of 521 Social Surveys of Residents' Reactions to Environmental Noise (1943-2000)

A tonal thickness noise and loading noise model of rotating blades has been developed as an extension of the exact frequency-domain solutions for rotating monopole and dipole point sources. The present model has two advantages over the previous methods and models for noise prediction. The first is the unified expression for sources in subsonic and supersonic rotation even at rest. The second is that the present model has no limit on the location of the observer and no interpolation error. Two test cases are carried out to validate the present model and emphasize its advantage at the noise prediction for sources in supersonic rotation. Moreover, as a specified application of the present model for the rotating blades whose tip radius is acoustically compact, acoustic energy distribution at different frequencies and in different directions is analyzed. Result shows that the acoustic energy of acoustically compact rotating blades is mainly concentrated at the source frequency while propagating along the axial direction, leaving the rest propagating along the radial direction at the other frequencies.

Aircraft noise may have a number of direct adverse effects on the communities surrounding airports, including annoyance. The annoyance reactions of individuals and communities to aircraft noise are predicted with annoyance models, which are normally functions of predictor variables that describe the noise exposure. The number of aircraft events that a person is exposed to (the number-of-events), has been hypothesized as a significant contributor to annoyance. However, most models of annoyance to aircraft noise are functions only of the average sound energy of the total noise exposure. The purpose of this research is to quantify the relative effects of sound level and number-of-events in historical noise survey data sets and to develop a survey simulation tool to help in the design of future surveys so that the collected data will be sufficient to compare the performance of proposed annoyance models. The models considered here are Day-Night Average Sound Level (DNL) and those that are a function of sound level and number-of-events. Seven historical data sets were collected and analyzed individually and in combination. Multiple linear regression models were estimated using the annoyance, sound level, and number-of-events variables in the data sets. The contributions of sound level and number-of-events to the prediction of annoyance were compared. Most regression models could not be distinguished from an equal-energy annoyance model. A general-purpose tool was developed to simulate annoyance surveys around airports. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of survey sampling approaches. Annoyance surveys were simulated around three airports in the United States. The use of stratification, as opposed to simple random sampling, resulted in more robust estimation of annoyance models.

Noise generation in axial flow fans

The disturbance due to aircraft noise which is being experienced in residential areas around the world's major airports is generally recognised as a serious problem. Indeed, the problem has reached the stage where public reaction is already influencing the development of future aircraft. Such influence may be seen in current international intention to include noise limitations in the certification of aircraft. Limits imposed on the noise generated by aircraft engines should serve to prevent the problem from becoming catastrophic, but cannot be expected to provide a final solution. Aircraft manufacturers may seem confident that further improvements in performance could be achieved without corresponding increase in noise, but further increases in air traffic could cancel out these gains and still leave communities near airports excessively disturbed.
