The Dual Auroral Radar Network (DARN) is a global-scale network of HF and VHF radars capable of sensing backscatter from ionospheric irregularities in the E and F-regions of the high-latitude ionosphere. Currently, the network consists of the STARE VHF radar system in northern Scandinavia, a northern-hemisphere, longitudinal chain of HF radars that is funded to extend from Saskatoon, Canada to central Finland, and a southern-hemisphere chain that is funded to include Halley Station, SANAE and Syowa Station in Antarctica. When all of the HF radars have been completed they will operate in pairs with common viewing areas so that the Doppler information contained in the backscattered signals may be combined to yield maps of high-latitude plasma convection and the convection electric field. In this paper, the evolution of DARN and particularly the development of its SuperDARN HF radar element is discussed. The DARN/SupperDARN network is particularly suited to studies of large-scale dynamical processes in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system, such as the evolution of the global configuration of the convection electric field under changing IMF conditions and the development and global extent of large-scale MHD waves in the magnetosphere-ionosphere cavity. A description of the HF radars within SuperDARN is given along with an overview of their existing and intended locations, intended start of operations, Principal Investigators, and sponsoring agencies. Finally, the operation of the DARN experiment within ISTP/GGS, the availability of data, and the form and availability of the Key Parameter files is discussed.

DARN/SUPERDARN : A global view of the dynamics of high-latitude convection

The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) has been operating as an international co-operative organization for over 10 years. The network has now grown so that the fields of view of its 18 radars cover the majority of the northern and southern hemisphere polar ionospheres. SuperDARN has been successful in addressing a wide range of scientific questions concerning processes in the magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, and mesosphere, as well as general plasma physics questions. We commence this paper with a historical introduction to SuperDARN. Following this, we review the science performed by SuperDARN over the last 10 years covering the areas of ionospheric convection, field-aligned currents, magnetic reconnection, substorms, MHD waves, the neutral atmosphere, and E-region ionospheric irregularities. In addition, we provide an up-to-date description of the current network, as well as the analysis techniques available for use with the data from the radars. We conclude the paper with a discussion of the future of SuperDARN, its expansion, and new science opportunities.

A decade of the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN): scientific achievements, new techniques and future directions

A statistical study of the occurrence of ground and ionospheric backscatter within the fields-of-view of the CUTLASS HF radars, at an operating frequency of 10 MHz, during the first 20 months of operation has been undertaken. The diurnal variation of the occurrence of backscatter and the range at which such backscatter is observed is found to be highly dependent on seasonal changes of the ionospheric electron density in both the E and F region, determined from ionosonde observations. In general, ionospheric backscatter is observed at far ranges during the local day in winter months and at near ranges during the local night in summer months. The Iceland radar observes more near-range E region backscatter than the Finland radar as a consequence of its more zonal look-direction. The dependence of the occurrence of backscatter on geomagnetic activity and radar operating frequency are also investigated. The occurrence of ground and ionospheric backscatter is discussed in terms of HF propagation modes and ionospheric electron densities as well as geophysical processes. A brief assessment of the possible impact of solar cycle variations on the observations is made and frequency management is discussed. Such a study, with its focus on the ‘instrumental’ aspect of backscatter occurrence, is essential for a full interpretation of HF coherent radar observations.

Initial backscatter occurrence statistics from the CUTLASS HF radars

The technique of F region sounding by HF coherent radar is applied to the study of field line resonances equatorward of a region of shear flow in the early morning sector. The motions were predominantly in the geomagnetic east-west direction, indicating north-south electric fields. These oscillations had pronounced peaks in their latitudinal power distribution. For the pulsation at 1.95 mHz, a latitudinal phase shift of 180 deg was observed across the peaks in all the look directions of the radar, and a longitudinal wavelength corresponding to an m value of 3 was obtained. For the 2.6-mHz pulsation, the phase shifts across the peaks had a variation with a look direction that indicated a significant longitudinal as well as latitudinal variation; for this activity, an m value of about 16 is estimated. These features are interpreted in terms of the field line resonance theory, and the possible sources of the pulsation energy are discussed.

HF radar observations of Pc 5 field line resonances in the midnight/early morning MLT sector

Data obtained with the Applied Physics Laboratory HF radar located in Goose Bay, Labrador, have been used to determine the characteristic features of high-latitude ionospheric irregularities at decameter wavelengths. In this paper, we describe a set of four events exhibiting particular characteristics. These observations took place in the postmidnight sector at E region altitudes. The scanning capabilities of the radar indicated that arclike regions of irregularities were moving approximately along L contours with a drift velocity of the order of 200 m/s or less. For periods of a few minutes to a few tens of minutes, localized regions of irregularities exhibiting high Doppler velocities (350 to 650 m/s) and large signal to noise ratios appeared within the radar arcs. Among the high Doppler velocity signals, two distinct types have been identified. Both types can be present simultaneously. One type is distributed between 320 and 550 m/s and has an average value of 445 m/s, while the other is distributed between 500 and 650 m/s and has an average value of 580 m/s. If one assumes the lower of the high-velocity signals to be the ion acoustic velocity C/sub s/, the higher velocity can be interpreted as electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC)more » waves produced by NO/sup +/ ions. These EIC waves follow perfectly the dispersion relation established from the fluid approximation ..omega../sub r/ = (..cap omega../sup 2//sub i/+k/sup 2/ C/sup 2//sub s/)/sup 1/2/. The radar echoes with low Doppler velocities are associated with irregularities produced by the gradient drift instability which presumably was operative at the top of the E layer.« less

HF radar observations of E region plasma irregularities produced by oblique electron streaming

In 1982 a new radar auroral backscatter system, SABRE (Sweden and Britain Radar Experiment), commenced operation in northern Europe. Observations with this ground-based system allow estimates to be made of the electric fields in the auroral E-region. As an electric field probe, the coherent radar technique is unique in that measurements are made over a large area (∼200,000 km2) with good spatial resolution (20 × 20 km2) and with a temporal resolution of typically 20 s. The system field of view covers an L-value range 4.3–5.8. This region in the magnetosphere–ionosphere system is now accessible for the first time for detailed electric field studies. We present here observations of two pulsation events.

A new radar auroral backscatter experiment

Observations of a Pc 5 micropulsation event, using the Wick half of the new SABRE auroral radar, are presented. During a 3-hour period in the early morning of September 18, 1981, a train of pulsations were recorded. Analysis revealed that there were three main events, rather than one continuous disturbance. The first event appeared as a perturbation of only one or two cycles, extending throughout the latitude of the viewing area. It was also visible in the STARE region, but the perturbation drift velocity was in the north-south direction as opposed to the east-west perturbation drift of a more conventional, toroidal mode field line resonance. The second disturbance was an isolated, one-cycle perturbation, also visible throughout both SABRE and STARE viewing areas and also having a dominant north-south velocity component. Finally, a very localized monochromatic event, lasting five cycles or more, with a period of about 5 min, was recorded. The characteristics of the third event were found to be consistent with those predicted by field line resonance theory. 18 references.
