Journal ArticleDOI
Cold streams in early massive hot haloes as the main mode of galaxy formation.
Avishai Dekel,Yuval Birnboim,Yuval Birnboim,G. Engel,Jonathan Freundlich,Tobias Goerdt,Michael Mumcuoglu,Eyal Neistein,C. Pichon,Romain Teyssier,Romain Teyssier,E. Zinger +11 more
TL;DR: ‘stream-fed galaxies’ are reported, formed from steady, narrow, cold gas streams that penetrate the shock-heated media of massive dark matter haloes and keep the rotating disk configuration intact, although turbulent and broken into giant star-forming clumps that merge into a central spheroid.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dancing in the dark: galactic properties trace spin swings along the cosmic web
Y. Dubois,C. Pichon,C. Welker,C. Welker,D. Le Borgne,Julien Devriendt,Clotilde Laigle,Sandrine Codis,Dmitry Pogosyan,Stéphane Arnouts,Karim Benabed,E. Bertin,J. Blaizot,François R. Bouchet,Jean-François Cardoso,Stéphane Colombi,V. de Lapparent,Vincent Desjacques,Raphael Gavazzi,Susan A. Kassin,Taysun Kimm,H. J. McCracken,B. Milliard,Sébastien Peirani,Simon Prunet,S. Rouberol,Joseph Silk,Adrianne Slyz,Thierry Sousbie,Romain Teyssier,Laurence Tresse,Marie Treyer,D. Vibert,M. Volonteri +33 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a large-scale hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, Horizon-AGN, is used to investigate the alignment between the spin of galaxies and the largescale cosmic filaments above red-shift one.
Journal ArticleDOI
The cosmic evolution of massive black holes in the Horizon-AGN simulation
TL;DR: In this article, the demographics of black holes in the Horizon-AGN simulation were analyzed, which statistically models how much gas is accreted on to BHs, traces the energy deposited into their environment and, consequently, the back-reaction of the ambient medium on BH growth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rigging dark halos: why is hierarchical galaxy formation consistent with the inside-out build-up of thin discs?
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that gas inflow through the virial sphere of dark matter halos is consistent (i.e. its orientation is steady in time) and amplified (e.g., the amplitude of its advected specific angular momentum increases with time).
Journal ArticleDOI
The Horizon-AGN simulation: evolution of galaxy properties over cosmic time
Sugata Kaviraj,Clotilde Laigle,Taysun Kimm,Julien Devriendt,Julien Devriendt,Yohan Dubois,C. Pichon,Adrianne Slyz,E. Chisari,Sébastien Peirani,Sébastien Peirani +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare the predictions of Horizon-AGN, a hydro-dynamical cosmological simulation that uses an adaptive mesh refinement code, to observational data in the redshift range 0 6.
