Some coelomycetes from Central Brazil

Diversity of saprotrophic filamentous fungi on Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (Brazilian pine).

Since the treatment of Harknessia Cke. by Sutton (1971) in which 16 species were accepted, there have been three further additions to the genus. Swart (1972) described the unusual species H. renispora on Melaleuca lanceolata R. Br. (Myrtaceae) from Victoria, Australia, Sutton and Alcorn apud Sutton (1975) added H. fumaginea on Eucalyptus pilularis Sm. (Myrtaceae) from Queensland, Australia, and Golatkar (1976) added H. gharsei (as 'gharsii') on Memecylon edule Roxb. (Melastomataceae) from India. Of these species only H. fumaginea is known from more than a single collection. It has been received subsequently at Herb. IMI on Eucalyptus grandis Sm., E. saligna Sm., and other unnamed Eucalyptus species from Brazil, and is now represented by eight collections. The only species known from coniferous substrates are H. thujina Ell. & Ev., on Thuja occidentalis L. from New Jersey, U. S. A. and Ontario, Canada, and H. podocarpi Lindquist & Sutton on Podocarpus parlatorei Pilger from Argentina. A third species, however, was collected by one of us (C.S.H.) on Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze in Brazil. It is distinctive not only because of the host substrate (from which no Harknessia has previously been reported) but also by its conidial morphology. Conidia are globose and measure 16-19 jum long x 14.5-20 ,m wide. At secession part of the conidiogenous cell remains attached as a basal conidial appendage 10-17 /tm long. No described species of Harknessia approaches this taxon in conidium width, and of the species with globose conidia none bears an appendage quite so long. On this basis the collection from Brazil is described as a new species.
