John M. Falletta,Gerald M. Woods,Joel Verter,George R. Buchanan,Charles H. Pegelow,Rathi V. Iyer,Scott T. Miller,C. Tate Holbrook,Thomas R. Kinney,Elliott Vichinsky,David L. Becton,Winfred C. Wang,Helen S. Johnstone,Doris L. Wethers,Gregory H. Reaman,Michael R. DeBaun,Neil J. Grossman,Karen Kalinyak,James H. Jorgensen,Ann B. Bjornson,Marilyn D. Thomas,Clarice D. Reid +21 more
TL;DR: Children with sickle cell anemia who have not had a prior severe pneumococcal infection or a splenectomy and are receiving comprehensive care may safely stop prophylactic penicillin therapy at 5 years of age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serotype-specific immunoglobulin G antibody responses to pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in children with sickle cell anemia: Effects of continued penicillin prophylaxis
Ann B. Bjornson,John M. Falletta,Joel Verter,George R. Buchanan,Scott T. Miller,Charles H. Pegelow,Rathi V. Iyer,Helen S. Johnstone,Michael R. DeBaun,Doris L. Wethers,Winfred C. Wang,Gerald M. Woods,C. Tate Holbrook,David L. Becton,Thomas R. Kinney,Gregory H. Reaman,Karen Kalinyak,Neil J. Grossman,Elliott Vichinsky,Clarice D. Reid +19 more
TL;DR: Serotype-specific IgG antibody responses to reimmunization varied according to pneumococcal serotype but in general were mediocre or poor; the poorest response was to serotype 6B.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of penicillin prophylaxis on antimicrobial resistance in nasopharyngeal S. Pneumoniae among children with sickle cell anemia
Gerald M. Woods,James H. Jorgensen,Myron A. Waclawiw,Clarice D. Reid,Winfred C. Wang,Charles H. Pegelow,Zora R. Rogers,Rathi V. Iyer,C. Tate Holbrook,Thomas R. Kinney,Elliott Vichinsky,Michael R. DeBaun,Neil J. Grossman,Marilyn D. Thomas,John M. Falletta +14 more
TL;DR: The data support the conclusion that, for children with no history of invasive pneumococcal disease, consideration should be given to discontinue prophylactic penicillin after their fifth birthday, but there was a trend toward increased carriage of multiply drug-resistant pneumococci in children > 5 years of age receiving prophyllicillin compared to children >5 years ofAge receiving placebo.
