Approximate Nonlinear Modeling of Aircraft Engine Surge Margin Based on Equilibrium Manifold Expansion

The aim of this article is that of proposing a novel approach for the control of an electric gas-generating unit for large power generation. The main objective of the control of a gas generating unit is that of controlling power production, in order to meet the requirements of grid operator, and keep the temperature of the exhaust gasses at the turbine outlet at a constant value in order to allow an optimal operation of the following heat recovery system. The focus of the paper is the definition of simplified representation of the gas turbine generator in order to evaluate the possibility of defining a control architecture based on the Sliding Mode theory that will avoid the necessity of measuring the temperature in the combustion chamber of the generator, which is an unavailable measurement.

Definition of a sliding mode controller accounting for a reduced order model of gas turbine set

A dynamic surface controller is proposed for the control of the rotating stall and surge of an aeroengine. The new control law is simpler than the backstepping method, which suffers from the problem of “explosion of terms.” The useful nonlinearities that would have been cancelled in a feedback linearizing design are retained in the proposed method. The same controller structure could be employed with or without measuring the rotating stall, and without obtaining the signal of rotating stall amplitude a priori. The design process based on Lyapunov tools and the simulations showed that with the proposed scheme, the boundedness of all signals of a closed-loop system could be assured.

Dynamic surface control design for the rotating stall and surge in an aeroengine compressor

To control the speed of a gas turbine compressor, Gravdahl and Egeland used a proportional control law. However, this control was not capable of preventing the axial compression system from entering in rotating stall and surge. In this paper, we propose a new model based on Gravdahl-Egeland's model, to which we add a CCV. The purpose is to have more flexibility in the design of strategies, to control simultaneousely the speed and surge/stall, and to accelerate the compressor without stalling it.
