Over the last few decades, Mixed Reality (MR) interfaces have received great attention from academia and industry. Although a considerable amount of research has already been done to support collaboration between users in MR, there is still no systematic review to determine the current state of collaborative MR applications. In this paper, collaborative MR studies published from 2013 to 2018 were reviewed. A total of 259 papers have been categorised based on their application areas, types of display devices used, collaboration setups, and user interaction and experience aspects. The primary contribution of this paper is to present a high-level overview of collaborative MR influence across several research disciplines. The achievements from each application area are summarised. In addition, remarkable papers in their respective areas are highlighted. Among other things, our study finds that there are three complementary factors to support and enhance collaboration in MR environments: (i) annotation techniques, which provide non-verbal communication cues to users, (ii) cooperative object manipulation techniques, which divide complex 3D object manipulation process into simpler tasks between different users, and (iii) user perception and cognition studies, which aim to lessen cognitive workload for task understanding and completion, and to increase users’ perceptual awareness and presence. Finally, this paper identifies research gaps and future directions that can be useful for researchers who want to explore ways on how to foster collaboration between users and to develop collaborative applications in MR.

A systematic review of the current state of collaborative mixed reality technologies: 2013–2018

"This paper evaluates the role of regional cluster composition in the economic performance of industries, clusters and regions. On the one hand, diminishing returns to specialization in a location can result in a convergence effect: the growth rate of an industry within a region may be declining in the level of activity of that industry. At the same time, positive spillovers across complementary economic activities provide an impetus for agglomeration: the growth rate of an industry within a region may be increasing in the size and “strength” (i.e., relative presence) of related economic sectors. Building on Porter (1998, 2003), we develop a systematic empirical framework to identify the role of regional clusters – groups of closely related and complementary industries operating within a particular region – in regional economic performance. We exploit newly available data from the US Cluster Mapping Project to disentangle the impact of convergence at the region-industry level from agglomeration within clusters. We find that, after controlling for the impact of convergence at the narrowest unit of analysis, there is significant evidence for cluster-driven agglomeration. Industries participating in a strong cluster register higher employment growth as well as higher growth of wages, number of establishments, and patenting. Industry and cluster level growth also increases with the strength of related clusters in the region and with the strength of similar clusters in adjacent regions. Importantly, we find evidence that new regional industries emerge where there is a strong cluster environment. Our analysis also suggests that the presence of strong clusters in a region enhances growth opportunities in other industries and clusters. Overall, these findings highlight the important role of cluster-based agglomeration in regional economic performance."

Clusters, Convergence, and Economic Performance

Both, globalization and technological advancements do motivate manufacturing organizations to adopt Industry 4.0 practices. It implies an evolutional transformation, which aggregates advanced technologies and cyber-physical interactions. Some of required capabilities are already existing in companies, but some have to be developed/ adopted. The purpose of this paper is to isolate these enables required for Industry 4.0. Consequently, extensive literature review was carried out to synthesize the enablers for Industry 4.0, which are further grouped in an associated Mind Map. The main enablers were isolated as human, organization and technology in the higher level with associated subordinated enablers in an organized manner. The scientific implication is that this Mind Map can be used in analysis, when introducing weighs and importance factors. Practically, the mind map embodies a body of knowledge, i.e. the enablers, that have to be internalized by managers to achieve Industry 4.0 practices. Existing Industry 4.0 research is either focusing on partial topics in depth, or it gives a general overview of readiness for Industry 4.0, which is a wide collection of factors. To our best knowledge there is no similar work guiding throughout enablers visually, easing the adaptation process.

Brainstorming the cryoplane layout by using the iterative AHP-QFD-AHP approach

Purpose




Small organizations within profit maximization supply chains form industrial clusters to share resources. They mainly deliver products and services in a reactive manner, where the cluster is only facilitating. However, the cluster management can lead business development and assign work packages intelligently to appropriate cluster members by respecting collaboration and innovation. This upgrade of the cluster management requires a systematic approach. Therefore, the intelligent Cluster Assignment Tool concept is developed and an illustrative example is given. The paper aims to discuss these issues.




Design/methodology/approach




Interviews and workshops were used to isolate the hierarchy of the assignment model, supported by a literature research. Fuzzy analytic hierarchy process method was applied to determine weights, consolidating data delivered by members of a Turkish aviation and defence cluster. The approach was discussed at the IEEE 2016 ICE Conference in Norway with experts to assess regional restrictions.




Findings




Cluster members are actively looking for possibilities to enhance innovation potential that they are ready to participate in systematic approaches. Cluster organizations can differ by leading their members actively, when respecting all isolated dimensions of assignment. This can lead towards a cooperation base enhancing the potential for innovation and new product development (NPD).




Research limitations/implications




The illustrative example indicates a good fit to clusters without a dominant anchor firm. The generic framework was deliberated on cross-sectional perspective as satisfactory to be applied to different sectors in developing economies.




Practical implications




This paper helps clusters and small organizations to upgrade for innovation. Furthermore, it delivers a strategic tool supporting organizational transformation, preventing the price trap as well.




Originality/value




This approach is focussing on multi-criteria assignment across cluster members, upgrading it to a united organization. It delivers a strategic framework for cluster management, building a collaboration environment leading to innovation and NPD.
