Network anomaly detection is an important and dynamic research area. Many network intrusion detection methods and systems (NIDS) have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we provide a structured and comprehensive overview of various facets of network anomaly detection so that a researcher can become quickly familiar with every aspect of network anomaly detection. We present attacks normally encountered by network intrusion detection systems. We categorize existing network anomaly detection methods and systems based on the underlying computational techniques used. Within this framework, we briefly describe and compare a large number of network anomaly detection methods and systems. In addition, we also discuss tools that can be used by network defenders and datasets that researchers in network anomaly detection can use. We also highlight research directions in network anomaly detection.

Network Anomaly Detection: Methods, Systems and Tools

Recent advances have given rise to the popularity and success of cloud computing. However, when outsourcing the data and business application to a third party causes the security and privacy issues to become a critical concern. Throughout the study at hand, the authors obtain a common goal to provide a comprehensive review of the existing security and privacy issues in cloud environments. We have identified five most representative security and privacy attributes (i.e., confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability, and privacy-preservability). Beginning with these attributes, we present the relationships among them, the vulnerabilities that may be exploited by attackers, the threat models, as well as existing defense strategies in a cloud scenario. Future research directions are previously determined for each attribute.

Security and Privacy in Cloud Computing

Smart grid is a promising power delivery infrastructure integrated with communication and information technologies. Its bi-directional communication and electricity flow enable both utilities and customers to monitor, predict, and manage energy usage. It also advances energy and environmental sustainability through the integration of vast distributed energy resources. Deploying such a green electric system has enormous and far-reaching economic and social benefits. Nevertheless, increased interconnection and integration also introduce cyber-vulnerabilities into the grid. Failure to address these problems will hinder the modernization of the existing power system. In order to build a reliable smart grid, an overview of relevant cyber security and privacy issues is presented. Based on current literatures, several potential research fields are discussed at the end of this paper.

Cyber Security and Privacy Issues in Smart Grids

As networks become ubiquitous in people's lives, users depend on networks a lot for sufficient communication and convenient information access. However, networks suffer from security issues. Network security becomes a challenging topic since numerous new network attacks have appeared increasingly sophisticated and caused vast loss to network resources. Game theoretic approaches have been introduced as a useful tool to handle those tricky network attacks. In this paper, we review the existing game-theory based solutions for network security problems, classifying their application scenarios under two categories, attack-defense analysis and security measurement. Moreover, we present a brief view of the game models in those solutions and summarize them into two categories, cooperative game models and non-cooperative game models with the latter category consisting of subcategories. In addition to the introduction to the state of the art, we discuss the limitations of those game theoretic approaches and propose future research directions.

Choosing Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) is difficult owing to the availability of different IDS techniques, the nature of attacks and the inability of IDS techniques to guarantee total security. The use of Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPSs) as a first line of defence does not prevent all attacks, so IDSs are needed as a second line of defence. Anomaly and signature-based techniques are the main approaches employed by IDSs. This new IDS technique is based on two main anomaly detection techniques: statistical and predictive pattern generation techniques. This IDS will detect both known and unknown attacks using signature-based and anomaly techniques.

Designing, planning and managing telecommunication, industrial control and enterprise networks with special emphasis on effectiveness, efficiency and reliability without considering security planning, management and constraints have made them vulnerable. They have become more vulnerable due to their recent connectivity to open networks with the intention of establishing decentralized management and remote control (Chunmei, Mingchu, Jianbo, & Jizhou, 2004; Chi-Ho Tsang & Kwong, 2005; Amanullah, Kalam, & Zayegh, 2005; Motta Pires & Oliveira, 2006; Haji, Lindsay, & Song, 2005; Car & Jakupovic, 2005; Pollet, 2002; Farris & Nicol, 2004; Dagle, Windergren, & Johnson, 2002). They are now real targets for terrorists and therefore need urgent attention (Bridis & Sullivan, 2007; McMillan, 2008). Existing Intrusion Prevention and Detection Systems (IPS and IDS) do not guarantee absolute security. Our new IDS, which employs both signature-based and anomaly detection as its analysis strategies, will be able to detect both known and unknown attacks and further isolate them.
