This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Edge Computing provides mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) app vendors with a new distributed computing paradigm which allows an app vendor to deploy its app at hired edge servers distributed near app users at the edge of the cloud. This way, app users can be allocated to hired edge servers nearby to minimize network latency and energy consumption. A cost-effective edge user allocation (EUA) requires maximum app users to be served with minimum overall system cost. Finding a centralized optimal solution to this EUA problem is NP-hard. Thus, we propose EUAGame, a game-theoretic approach that formulates the EUA problem as a potential game. We analyze the game and show that it admits a Nash equilibrium. Then, we design a novel decentralized algorithm for finding a Nash equilibrium in the game as a solution to the EUA problem. The performance of this algorithm is theoretically analyzed and experimentally evaluated. The results show that the EUA problem can be solved effectively and efficiently.

A Game-Theoretical Approach for User Allocation in Edge Computing Environment

In mobile edge computing, edge servers are geographically distributed around base stations placed near end-users to provide highly accessible and efficient computing capacities and services. In the mobile edge computing environment, a service provider can deploy its service on hired edge servers to reduce end-to-end service delays experienced by its end-users allocated to those edge servers. An optimal deployment must maximize the number of allocated end-users and minimize the number of hired edge servers while ensuring the required quality of service for end-users. In this paper, we model the edge user allocation (EUA) problem as a bin packing problem, and introduce a novel, optimal approach to solving the EUA problem based on the Lexicographic Goal Programming technique. We have conducted three series of experiments to evaluate the proposed approach against two representative baseline approaches. Experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms the other two approaches.

Optimal Edge User Allocation in Edge Computing with Variable Sized Vector Bin Packing

Towards a proper service placement in combined Fog-to-Cloud (F2C) architectures

Cloud computing provides on-demand access to a shared pool of computing resources, which enables organizations to outsource their IT infrastructure. Cloud providers are building data centers to handle the continuous increase in cloud users' demands. Consequently, these cloud data centers consume, and have the potential to waste, substantial amounts of energy. This energy consumption increases the operational cost and the CO2 emissions. The goal of this paper is to develop an optimized energy and SLA-aware virtual machine (VM) placement strategy that dynamically assigns VMs to Physical Machines (PMs) in cloud data centers. This placement strategy co-optimizes energy consumption and service level agreement (SLA) violations. The proposed solution adopts utility functions to formulate the VM placement problem. A genetic algorithm searches the possible VMs-to-PMs assignments with a view to finding an assignment that maximizes utility. Simulation results using CloudSim show that the proposed utility-based approach reduced the average energy consumption by approximately 6 % and the overall SLA violations by more than 38 %, using fewer VM migrations and PM shutdowns, compared to a well-known heuristics-based approach.

More than bin packing

Modern enterprise data centers take advantage of virtual machine consolidation to allocate virtual machines to virtualized servers to increase energy efficiency. One key problem is to minimize the number of virtualized servers required while maintaining service quality. A promising approach is to exploit recurring load patterns exhibited by enterprise VMs for increased allocation efficiency. This paper shows that bin packing heuristics can deliver the same allocation quality as integer linear programs if calculation time is constrained. There were no significant differences between vector bin packing heuristics in simulations based on CPU load profiles obtained from enterprise data centers. We further show that consolidating in clusters of a few hundred virtual machines is sufficient as solution quality does not improve with larger clusters.
