Journal ArticleDOI
Occurrence, fate and removal of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in water and wastewater treatment plants—A review
TL;DR: In this article, the occurrence of Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in water and wastewater worldwide as well as their fate, focusing on the removal by conventional WTPs and the risk imposed to human health associated to the presence of PhACs in raw and drinking water.
Journal ArticleDOI
A critical review on membrane separation processes applied to remove pharmaceutically active compounds from water and wastewater
TL;DR: In this article, the rejection mechanisms and the interactions between PhACs and NOM or inorganic salts are well understood, and it is consensual that tighter NF membranes are more efficient than looser membranes, reaching >99% of removal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing potential of nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and membrane distillation drinking water treatment for pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) removal
Carolina Fonseca Couto,Amanda Vitória Santos,Míriam Cristina Santos Amaral,Liséte Celina Lange,Laura Hamdan de Andrade,Ana Flávia Souza Foureaux,Bárbara Stella Fernandes +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the rejection of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) by nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), and membrane distillation (MD) was investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Occurrence and risk assessment of pharmaceutically active compounds in water supply systems in Brazil
Amanda Vitória Santos,Carolina Fonseca Couto,Yuri Abner Rocha Lebron,Victor Rezende Moreira,Ana Flávia Souza Foureaux,Eduarda Oliveira Reis,Lucilaine Valéria de Souza Santos,Laura Hamdan de Andrade,Míriam Cristina Santos Amaral,Liséte Celina Lange +9 more
TL;DR: Effects of seasonality and socioeconomic aspects were observed in PhACs occurrence, like their higher concentrations during winter and in locales with higher values of gross domestic product per capita and human development index, but all surface waters were subject to toxicological risk owing to at least one PhAC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of humic acid concentration on pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) rejection by direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD)
Carolina Fonseca Couto,Míriam Cristina Santos Amaral,Liséte Celina Lange,Lucilaine Valéria de Souza Santos +3 more
TL;DR: In this article, a direct contact membrane distillation process was used to achieve rejection of 25 pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in water, which was mainly governed by volatility and, to a lesser extent, by hydrophobia.
