This chapter is devoted to a more detailed examination of game theory. Game theory is an important tool for analyzing strategic behavior, is concerned with how individuals make decisions when they recognize that their actions affect, and are affected by, the actions of other individuals or groups. Strategic behavior recognizes that the decision-making process is frequently mutually interdependent. Game theory is the study of the strategic behavior involving the interaction of two or more individuals, teams, or firms, usually referred to as players. Two game theoretic scenarios were examined in this chapter: Simultaneous-move and multi-stage games. In simultaneous-move games the players effectively move at the same time. A normal-form game summarizes the players, possible strategies and payoffs from alternative strategies in a simultaneous-move game. Simultaneous-move games may be either noncooperative or cooperative. In contrast to noncooperative games, players of cooperative games engage in collusive behavior. A Nash equilibrium, which is a solution to a problem in game theory, occurs when the players’ payoffs cannot be improved by changing strategies. Simultaneous-move games may be either one-shot or repeated games. One-shot games are played only once. Repeated games are games that are played more than once. Infinitely-repeated games are played over and over again without end. Finitely-repeated games are played a limited number of times. Finitely-repeated games have certain or uncertain ends.

An Introduction to Game Theory

We present PROB, an animation and model checking tool for the B method PROB's animation facilities allow users to gain confidence in their specifications, and unlike the animator provided by the B-Toolkit, the user does not have to guess the right values for the operation arguments or choice variables PROB contains a model checker and a constraint-based checker, both of which can be used to detect various errors in B specifications We present our first experiences in using PROB on several case studies, highlighting that PROB enables users to uncover errors that are not easily discovered by existing tools

A decision method for elementary algebra and geometry

We address the problem of off-line fault tolerant scheduling of an algorithm onto a multiprocessor architecture with distributed memory and provide a generic algorithm which solves this problem. We take into account two kinds of failures: fail-silent and omission. The basic technique we use is the replication of operations and data communications. We then discuss the principles which govern the execution of schedulings with replication under the state-machine and the primary/backup arbitrations between replicas. We also show how to compute the execution date for each operation and the timeouts which are used for detecting failures. We end with a heuristic which, using this calculus, computes a possibly non optimal scheduling by finding plain schedulings for each failure pattern and then combining them into a scheduling with replication.

Off-line real-time fault-tolerant scheduling

We present a variant of ATL with incomplete information which includes the distributed knowledge operators corresponding to synchronous action and perfect recall. The cooperation modalities assume the use the distributed knowledge of coalitions and accordingly refer to perfect recall incomplete information strategies. We propose a model-checking algorithm for the logic. It is based on techniques for games with imperfect information and partially observable objectives, and involves deciding emptiness for automata on infinite trees. We also propose an axiomatic system and prove its completeness for a rather expressive subset. As for the constructs left outside this completely axiomatised subset, we present axioms by which they can be defined in the subset on the class of models in which every state has finitely many successors and give a complete axiomatisation for a “flat” subset of the logic with these constructs included.

Real-time automata

We present a variant of ATL with distributed knowledge operators based on a synchronous and perfect recall semantics. The coalition modalities in this logic are based on partial observation of the full history, and incorporate a form of cooperation between members of the coalition in which agents issue their actions based on the distributed knowledge, for that coalition, of the system history. We show that model-checking is decidable for this logic. The technique utilizes two variants of games with imperfect information and partially observable objectives, as well as a subset construction for identifying states whose histories are indistinguishable to the considered coalition.

Model-Checking an Alternating-time Temporal Logic with Knowledge, Imperfect Information, Perfect Recall and Communicating Coalitions

We give an algorithmic calculus of the reachability relations on clock values defined by timed automata. Our approach is a modular one, by computing unions, compositions and reflexive-transitive closure (star) of "atomic" relations. The essential tool is a new representation technique for n-clock relations - the 2n-automata - and our strategy is to show the closure under union, composition and star of the class of 2n-automata that represent reachability relations in timed automata.
