Advanced Nanoarchitectures for Solar Photocatalytic Applications

The photocatalytic activity of materials for water splitting is limited by the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs as well as the back-reaction of intermediate species. This review concentrates on the use of electric fields within catalyst particles to mitigate the effects of recombination and back-reaction and to increase photochemical reactivity. Internal electric fields in photocatalysts can arise from ferroelectric phenomena, p–n junctions, polar surface terminations, and polymorph junctions. The manipulation of internal fields through the creation of charged interfaces in hierarchically structured materials is a promising strategy for the design of improved photocatalysts.

Multiferroic bismuth ferrite-based materials for multifunctional applications: Ceramic bulks, thin films and nanostructures

The development and utilization of solar energy in environmental remediation and water splitting is being intensively studied worldwide. During the past few decades, tremendous efforts have been devoted to developing non-toxic, low-cost, efficient and stable photocatalysts for water splitting and environmental remediation. To date, several hundreds of photocatalysts mainly based on metal oxides, sulfides and (oxy)nitrides with different structures and compositions have been reported. Among them, perovskite oxides and their derivatives (layered perovskite oxides) comprise a large family of semiconductor photocatalysts because of their structural simplicity and flexibility. This review specifically focuses on the general background of perovskite and its related materials, summarizes the recent development of perovskite photocatalysts and their applications in water splitting and environmental remediation, discusses the theoretical modelling and calculation of perovskite photocatalysts and presents the key challenges and perspectives on the research of perovskite photocatalysts.

Inorganic perovskite photocatalysts for solar energy utilization

BiFeO3 (BFO) is of considerable interest because of its potential applications in the design of devices combining magnetic, electronic, and optical functionalities. Effects of the Gd dopant on the structural, photocatalytic activity, and ferromagnetic properties of BFO nanoparticles have been studied. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra results of Bi1−xGdxFeO3 (BGFOx, x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15) reflect that the crystal structure of the samples remain stable for x < 0.1, while compositional-driven phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic is observed at x = 0.1. The photocatalytic activity to decompose Rhodamine-B under visible-light illumination increases in BGFOx as x increases from zero to 0.1 and then decreases for x = 0.15. The maximum in photocatalytic activity near the phase boundary of x = 0.1 is associated with the changing of the polar behavior of the nanoparticles. Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity and Ferromagnetism in Gd Doped BiFeO3 Nanoparticles

Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) uniform microcrystals with various morphologies (microspheres and micro/submirocubes) were successfully synthesized by a controlled hydrothermal method. The resulting microstructures were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning/transmission electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. Possible formation mechanism for BiFeO3 microcrystals was proposed. UV−vis spectra showed that the optical properties of the microsized BiFeO3 crystals were strongly related to their shape and size. We further demonstrated the useful photocatalytic activity of these regular-shaped structures as determined by degradation of Congo red under visible-light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). Additionally, magnetic responses were observed to be influenced by the morphology of as-synthesized BiFeO3 products, and the ferroelectric performance of BiFeO3 submicrocube was also studied by piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM).
