Association between physical activity and quality of life in the elderly: a systematic review, 2000-2012

Diseases and disorders that damage the mouth and face can disturb well-being and his self-esteem. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) is a relatively new but rapidly growing notion. The concept of OHRQOL can become a tool to understand and shape not only the state of clinical practice, dental research and dental education but also that of community at large. There are different approaches to measure OHRQOL; the most popular one is multiple item questionnaires. OHRQOL should be the basis for any oral health programme development. Moreover, research at the conceptual level is needed in countries where OHRQOL has not been previously assessed, including India.

Oral health related quality of life.

The diagnosis of periodontal disease is commonly based on objective evaluations of the patient's medical/dental history as well as clinical and radiographic examinations. However, periodontal disease should also be evaluated subjectively through measures that quantify its impact on oral health-related quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of periodontal disease on quality of life among adolescents, adults and older adults. A systematic search of the literature was performed for scientific articles published up to July 2015 using electronic databases and a manual search. Two independent reviewers performed the selection of the studies, extracted the data and assessed the methodological quality. Thirty-four cross-sectional studies involving any age group, except children, and the use of questionnaires for the assessment of the impact of periodontal disease on quality of life were included. Twenty-five studies demonstrated that periodontal disease was associated with a negative impact on quality of life, with severe periodontitis exerting the most significant impact by compromising aspects related to function and esthetics. Unlike periodontitis, gingivitis was associated with pain as well as difficulties performing oral hygiene and wearing dentures. Gingivitis was also negatively correlated with comfort. The results indicate that periodontal disease may exert an impact on quality of life of individuals, with greater severity of the disease related to greater impact. Longitudinal studies with representative samples are needed to ensure validity of the findings.

Impact of periodontal disease on quality of life: a systematic review

There are frequent allusions to the influence of religious aspects on cure and ilness processes in health contexts. In the last two decades, the relationship between religiosity and coping has been investigated mostly by social sciences and health researchers. This article consists on a literature review about religiosity and coping in health contexts. Cognitive or behavioral strategies which come from religiosity in order to cope with stress are called religious coping. This review includes historic aspects of the connection between religiosity and health, the positive and negative functions of religious coping, the religious coping assessment by instruments, and some research results in this area.

Religiosidade e enfrentamento em contextos de saúde e doença: revisão da literatura

As life expectancy continues to rise, one of the greatest challenges of public health is to improve the quality of later years of life. The aim of this present study was to analyze the quality of life profile of the elderly across different demographic and socioeconomic factors. A cross-sectional study was carried out in two stages, involving 1,958 individuals aged 60 years or more. Health related quality of life (HRQOL) was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. The lowest scores were found among measures for vitality, mental health and general health and the highest among factors including social functioning and role limitations due to emotional and physical factors. HRQOL was found to be worse among women, in individuals at advanced ages, those who practiced evangelical religions and those with lower levels of income and schooling. The greatest differences in SF-36 scores between the categories were observed in functional capacity and physical factors. The results suggest that healthcare programs for the elderly should take into account the multi-dimensionality of health and social inequalities so that interventions can target the most affected elements of HRQOL as well as the most vulnerable subgroups of the population.

Health related quality of life among the elderly: a population-based study using SF-36 survey

The quality of life (QL) concept has led to extensive scientific research and has been increasingly used by health care professionals treating a wide range of diseases. This paper addresses the historical use of the concept and specific issues linked to conceptual and methodological aspects of the QL construct within the health care context. Reviewing the literature, two aspects stand out: subjectivity and multidimensionality. In the methodological field, the construction and/or adaptation of QL measurement instruments appear as a significant trend. Theoretical and methodological efforts have helped clarify and improve the concept's adequacy. The QL construct is definitely interdisciplinary, encompassing contributions by different areas of knowledge and research, thereby improving its conceptual and methodological potential as a research instrument. Therefore, use of the concept can actually help improve both the quality and the integrated, multidimensional nature of health care from a perspective that views the latter as a basic citizen's right.

Qualidade de vida e saúde: aspectos conceituais e metodológicos

The goal of this study was to investigate the factorial structure of the Brazilian version of the Ways of Coping Scale (Gimenes & Queiroz, 1997) that measures coping strategies people use when facing specific stressors. The sample of 409 male and female adults was divided into two groups: 252 reported one major stressor related to a real problem in their everyday activities and the other 157 reported and described the suffering of a chronic disease. A factor analysis with principal axis method and orthogonal rotation, extracted four factors: coping strategies based on the stressor, coping strategies based on the emotion, religiosity/fantasy thinking and search for social support. Comparisons between the two samples suggested different possibilities for the development of research and intervention in the clinical work aimed at the management of stress by different type of patients.

Análise Fatorial de Uma Medida de Estratégias de Enfrentamento

A model describing quality of life (QoL) as a function of health conditions, education, marital status, coping and social support in symptomatic or asymptomatic HIV-infected patients was tested. The participants were 241 adults, aged 20 to 64, 161 men, 169 symptomatic, and 208 on antiretroviral treatment. The criterion variable QoL was represented by the psychosocial, physical, environmental and overall quality of life dimensions measured by the Brazilian version of the World Health Organization QoL Assessment. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that the emotional support, emotion-focused coping, problem-focused coping, and marital status were significant predictors explaining 59% (adjusted) of the variance in the psychosocial dimension. Emotional support and emotion-focused coping were significant predictors associated to the other QoL analyzed dimensions. Implications concerning professional interventions and factors that should contribute to the improvement of the psychological well-being and QoL of seropositive persons are discussed.

Desafios à psicologia na instituição de saúde

This introductory critical review addresses childhood malnutrition and its relation to child behavioral development. Methodological issues concerning the study of this relationship are presented. Implications of psychometric and epidemiological studies are pointed, focusing on results obtained with cognitive scales and the most common statistical measurement. The relevance of behavioral technology for functional analysis of the malnourished children development is emphasized. Its importance is also pointed for the elucidation of the effects of environmental intervention towards the establishment of favorable conditions for behavioral development.
